 Microsoft Researcher to Receive ACM SIGGRAPH Achievement Award New York, July 8, 2004 -- ACM SIGGRAPH will award its 2004 Computer Graphics Achievement Award to Hugues Hoppe for his pioneering work on surface reconstruction, progressive meshes, geometry texturing and geometry images. His work addresses a key issue in shape representations, the development of efficient data structures, and algorithms for data reduction and multiresolution modeling. Hoppe's introduction of a progressive mesh framework offers an efficient approach that supports smooth geomorphing of level-of-detail approximations, progressive transmission, mesh compression, and selective refinement. His progressive meshes paper has become one of the most widely cited papers in the history of SIGGRAPH. Over the past ten years, Hoppe has been a visible and prolific researcher. Several of his papers are considered milestones that have significantly influenced the computer graphics field. Hoppe moved to the US from Belgium at age 14. He received his BS and PhD degrees from the University of Washington and is currently a senior researcher with Microsoft Research. The Computer Graphics Achievement award is given each year for outstanding achievement in computer graphics and interactive techniques. Hoppe will receive his award at SIGGRAPH 2004, August 8-12, at the Los Angeles Convention Center in Los Angeles, CA.
