ACM HONORS PIONEER IN ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AND ROBOTICS
Research Director Emphasized Role of Computer Science in Scientific Progress
New York, March 4, 2002...The Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) has recognized Dr. Ruzena Bajcsy for
her research contributions in image processing, artificial intelligence, medical imaging and machine perception.
Dr. Bajcsy was instrumental in shaping the field of computational anatomy. With her work in bringing together the
disparate fields of control and computer vision, she has had a major influence on the field of robotics and
artificial intelligence. She was recently named director of the Center for Information Technology Research in the
Interest of Society (CITRIS) at the University of California Berkeley. She will receive the Allen Newell Award,
which is cosponsored by ACM and the American Association for Artificial Intelligence (AAAI).
Dr. Bajcsy recently served as Assistant Director for Computer and Information Science and Engineering at the
National Science Foundation. "At NSF Dr. Bajcsy was instrumental in convincing the technology policy community
that computing goes beyond laptops and workstations, and that basic computer science is important to the progress
of all of science," said John R. White, Executive Director and CEO of ACM.
ACM will present the Allen Newell Award at the annual ACM Awards Banquet on April 27, 2002, at the University of
Toronto. The award was named for Allen Newell, a pioneer in artificial intelligence.
