ACM HONORS FLORIDA PROFESSOR FOR GLOBAL IMPACT ON EDUCATION


New York, May 13, 2004 -- ACM has selected Professor Sartaj Sahni of the University of Florida for its 2003 Karl V. Karlstrom Outstanding Educator to honor his global impact on computer science education. Professor Sahni is a prolific author, editor and reviewer of successful text books for the computing discipline, many of which have been translated in to several languages. During his 20-year chairmanship of the National Technological University’s Computer Science Curriculum committee, Professor Sahni developed graduate curricula and courses for distance learning applications.

Professor Sahni has written 15 books, including significant textbooks on discrete mathematics, data structures, algorithms, and parallel and distributed computing. He contributed to a variety of professional societies, playing leadership roles in many national and international conferences. In addition, he published more than160 refereed journal articles and book chapters, and 120 articles in refereed conference proceedings. A Distinguished Professor and Chair of the Computer and Information Science and Engineering Department at the University of Florida, Professor Sahni has supervised more than 35 Ph.D. students.

Professor Sahni earned his Ph.D. and MA degrees at Cornell University, following undergraduate work at the Indian Institute of Technology in Kanpur. He is a Fellow of ACM, AAAS and IEEE and a member of the European Academy of Sciences. He received the IEEE Computer Society Taylor L. Booth Award in 1997, and the W. Wallace McDowell Award in 2003.

ACM will present the 2003 Karlstrom Award to Professor Sahni at its annual Awards Banquet on June 5, at the Plaza Hotel in New York. The $5,000 prize is supplied by the Prentice-Hall Publishing Company.
