PREFACE
ACM is an educational, scientific, and technical society. Education and professional development are among its main goals.
The purpose of this handbook is to encourage and assist chapters in conducting local professional development seminars. PD seminars can:
- Provide a low-cost, high-quality professional advancement opportunity for ACM members and others
- Enhance the image of the ACM chapter in the community
- Give members experience in project organization
- Attract new members to the chapter
- Raise funds for chapter projects
With careful planning and diligent work, a PDS can be very successful. The PDS activity is not intended primarily as a money-making venture, so chapters are urged to hold registration fees to a minimum for the widest possible attendance. We hope that this handbook will help to guide chapter efforts.
It is requested that you notify the ACM Organization of your chapter's intention to conduct a PD seminar. This is less than approval process than it is a means of gathering information - which can be disseminated among other chapters and SIG/SIC's to help them in similar efforts. It should be sent to the PDS Express Committee six weeks before the seminar date. A TMP (ACM Technical Meeting Profile) for this purpose can be downloaded from the ACM PDS Express web page or a printed copy can be requested from headquarters. TMPs can be submitted via email to chapters@acm.org.
