How To Start an ACM Student SIG (Special Interest Group) Chapter

The requirements for an ACM Student SIG Chapter formation are as follows:

  • 10 interested students willing to form and carry out the mission of the chapter

  • a petition signed by these students, requesting recognition as a chapter and identifying interim officers

  • a set of student chapter bylaws, approved by the Membership Services Board

  • a first year activity plan

  • US CHAPTERS ONLY: The IRS requires that all U.S. ACM Chapters obtain an Employer Identification Number (EIN). In order to obtain an EIN, the chapter sponsor or chair signature is required on the IRS Form 2848.

Only three of the officers need to be student members of the ACM and members of the relevant ACM SIG. In addition, each student chapter must have an advisor-a full-time staff member at the school who is a voting member of ACM and a member of the relevant ACM SIG.

The Student Chapters Program at ACM has a network of over 500 chapters at schools worldwide. Through their activities, these groups help promote education in computer science and gain their members' insight into computing as a profession. In addition, chapter activities provide the opportunity for students to develop both professional and leadership skills.

If you have any questions about chapter formation please contact the Local Activities Department at local_activities@acm.org.
