Outstanding Student Chapter School Service Award 2006-2007
Stony Brook University was founded in 1957 as a state institution. It employs over 1,900 faculty members with 97% of full-time faculty holding doctoral degrees or the highest in their field. Stony Brook University has been ranked 76th in the world and 24th in the United States for science. The computer science department at the university has been ranked 15th in the nation and 2nd in the state of New York.
The Stony Brook ACM Chapter is responsible for conducting numerous academic, social, and professional events, all of which are open to all students. Our purpose is simple, to help Stony Brook students get the most out of their years here. Below and on our website (www.sbcs-acm.com), we have documented the events and activities that we have conducted to help us reach this goal. We have over 480 students and alumni registered on our website and have approximately 20 active members. The vast majority of our members major in Computer Science or Information Systems. Approximately 1,000 students take computer science and related courses including undergraduate, graduate, pre and non-major students.
For several years, the Stony Brook ACM Chapter has provided an invaluable and
popular service to the Computer Science department and students. We have offered
review sessions for all 100 and 200 level core classes. Every semester the ACM
Chapter holds review sessions for nine Computer Science courses serving over 500
students. Sessions are held for:
CSE 110 - Introduction to Computer
Science
CSE 113 - Foundations of Computer Science I
CSE 114 - Computer
Science I
CSE 130 - Introduction to Programming in C
CSE 213 - Foundations
of Computer Science II
CSE 214 - Computer Science II
CSE 219 - Computer
Science III
CSE 220 - Computer Organization
CSE 230 - Intermediate
Programming in C and C++
Detailed descriptions on these courses can be found at: http://www.cs.sunysb.edu/undergrad/csprogram/index.html
One of the most important goals of the ACM Chapter is to help advance Stony Brook's Computer Science majors to success and beyond. The tutoring sessions that we hold allow the participant to gain a better grasp of the subject material while answering any questions or concerns that the student may have. Reviews are held before each major exam, including finals, totaling approximately 22 review sessions per semester and average approximately 30 students per review session. Dedicated tutors take time out of their own schedule, 2 - 3 hours per session, in order to provide this service. Tutors coordinate with professors in order to provide the proper content to students. In some cases, students use their own experience and knowledge to create custom questions and even entire exams to account for new material or other gaps from previous semesters. As a result, we receive excellent reviews from students who have attended our review sessions. To some, the review sessions are invaluable as they help to keep students on track for the Computer Science major. Review sessions are announced in class and on our website.
