Student SIG Chapters: How to Start

How to Start an
ACM Student SIG (Special Interest Group) Chapter

ACM Special Interest Groups (SIGs) address the varied needs of today’s IT professionals and students, including computer graphics, human interfaces, artificial intelligence, data mining, mobile communications, and programming languages. Each SIG is organized around activities that best serve its practitioner and research-based constituencies. Many SIGS sponsor leading conferences and workshops, produce newsletters and publications, and support e-mail forums for information exchange.

Students join ACM-SIG chapters as a way of connecting to the study and practice of these special interests. Chapter members collaborate with fellow students and with distinguished faculty in research, conferences, and outreach. Student SIG chapters are particularly appropriate for graduate and PhD students.

1.

Form a group of at least ten (10) interested students, willing to participate in activities and carry out the chapter's mission.

2.

Find an ACM professional member who is also a member of the relevant SIG to serve as the chapter's sponsor.

3.

Elect four (4) interim officers to run chapter business. All of the petitioning officers must be student members of ACM and members of the relevant
ACM SIG.

4.

Begin the chartering process by completing petition, bylaws, and first year activity plan:

The materials you submit will be reviewed for completeness and then presented to the ACM Chief Operating Officer for charter approval. Please note that failing to include any one of these items will result in a delay in chartering. Incomplete petitions will be held for one month after initial notice of receipt.

Please note that you are required by the ACM Constitution to adopt the sample bylaws exactly as they are shown, unless you receive in advance specific permission to change them from the Local Activities Coordinator.

Any major chapter activities such as conferences or multiple-day events must be approved through the ACM Local Activities Coordinator before they are scheduled.
