Welcome!

This is the archival website for CSCW 2002, the ACM Conference on Computer Supported Cooperative Work.

CSCW is a leading forum for presenting and discussing research and development achievements in the design, introduction, and use of technologies that affect groups, organizations, communities, and societies. As well as covering traditional topics around working and working relationships, the conference is expanding its focus to include all contexts in which technology is used to mediate communication, coordination, cooperation and even competition among people, including entertainment and the remote sharing of intimate moments.

CSCW 2002 welcomed newcomers as well as CSCW regulars. The program included presentations of papers, panels, demonstrations and - for the first time at CSCW - interactive posters, and a special performance showcasing computer supported cooperative theatre (Virtual Meditation #1). CSCW also offered a world-class tutorial program with full-day and half-day mini-courses taught by leading CSCW experts.

The conference lead off with a presentation by Howard Rheingold, author of Virtual Communities and the forthcoming Smart Mobs, and concluded with an address by Stewart Brand, author of How Buildings Learn and The Clock of the Long Now. We also took full advantage of our locale by hosting a conference reception at Pat O'Brien's on Bourbon Street.

Benefactors and Sponsors significantly enhanced the conference experience by enabling us to provide conference participants with more than they pay for. We especially thank our Benefactors, Microsoft Research, IBM Research, and SMART Technologies, as well as our Sponsor, Sun Microsystems. We are also grateful to the many volunteers whose efforts made the conference possible.

We enjoyed seeing you all in New Orleans!
