About New Orleans

New Orleans is famous for its unique cultural heritage and easy going lifestyle. It is home to the Louisiana Superdome (the world's largest indoor arena), Mardi Gras, and a whole host of museums, historical neighborhoods, and fine eateries.  The National D-Day museum opened here on June 6, 2000 to honor those who fought in World War II.  It is the first museum of its kind in the country.  A ride on New Orleans's popular streetcar line is just a few blocks away from the conference hotel.

General Information

The following web sites may be useful in obtaining further information on New Orleans:

Sights of New Orleans

New Orleans has many interesting things to see.  Take a quick glance at what you can expect by visiting the following sites:

Weather

Temperatures range in the 50s to 70s (10 - 21 C) in November. There is also a good chance of rain, so having an umbrella on hand would be advisable.  Get information about the current weather conditions here.

Entertainment

Simply taking a stroll around the many historic neighborhoods that New Orleans has to offer can provide hours of enjoyment.  The world famous French Quarter is a prime example.  It's intriguing blend of old and new world ideas is something truly unique.  It is located about 12 blocks away from the conference hotel.

The animal lover will find that the Audubon Zoo and Aquarium of the Americas are among the nations' best.  They each house numerous specimens from all over the world and provide visitors with a fascinating glimpse into the lives of wild and exotic creatures.  The Entergy I-MAX Theater located in the aquarium serves to enhance the experience and is an attraction in its own right.  Group tours are available.

Great shopping can be had at the New Orleans Centre, which has more than 60 shops and a food court.  For the adventurous, Harrah's Casino, 9 blocks from the conference hotel, provides the gamer with 2,900 slots and 120 table games.

Louisiana is known as the "Sportsman's Paradise" for good reason.  Take a Swamp Tour and find out about the wild side of New Orleans.  Pickup is available from the hotel.

This list would not be complete without some mention of New Orleans's diverse array of museums.  The National D-Day Museum offers visitors a look at thousands of World War II artifacts and provides interactive exhibits that bring the war to life.  Art connoisseurs will appreciate the wide selection on hand at the New Orleans Museum of Art.  The museum features art from around the world and has several enviable pieces currently on display including 3 Imperial Easter Eggs by Faberge, and a collection of old Paris porcelains.  Finally, the Voodoo Museum offers a fascinating glimpse into this extraordinary religion.

Dining

Great cuisine and New Orleans are synonymous with one another - 40 local restaurants have Zagat food scores of 25 or higher! Numerous restaurants in the French Quarter and Downtown are easily accessible from the conference hotel. (Closer and quicker is the food court in the New Orleans Center, adjacent to the hotel.) Many restaurants serve New Orleans specialties such as jambalaya, gumbo, crawfish étouffée, shrimp creole, muffaletta, and po' boys, although more traditional (and vegetarian) fare is also available. Prices at many of these restaurants are generally reasonable. More information about local dining options will be available at the conference.
