CSCW 2002 extends a warm welcome to American Anthropological Association (AAA) members who would like to learn about research in Computer Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW) and the important role that ethnographic methods have played and continue to play in this domain. This year CSCW 2002 takes place just prior to the 2002 Annual AAA Meeting at the same conference facility in New Orleans.

What are the goals of CSCW research?

CSCW is a multi-disciplinary research community that includes sociologists, anthropologists, computer scientists, and information scientists from around the world who are interested in examining the role of coordination and communication technologies in everyday life and how these technologies affect groups, organizations, and communities. Research within CSCW ranges from the design and implementation of novel collaborative technologies to ethnographic studies of technology in use within workplaces, homes, and institutional settings. CSCW has consistently been at the forefront in advancing our understanding of the role of coordination and communication technologies in our lives.

The CSCW conference is a venue for bringing together people from diverse backgrounds, cultures and perspectives to discuss topics such as: people's everyday experience with the Internet; technologies to support awareness and telepresence; methodologies for design and analysis of collaborative systems and practices, including ethnographic studies; and emerging issues in the design and implementation of global systems.

What role does ethnographic methods play in CSCW research?

One of the important facets of CSCW research is the incorporation of ethnographic approaches and methods in the study of work and activity in many different settings (e.g., shop floors, hospitals, banks, air traffic control towers, schools, community centers, homes). The findings from ethnographic research have driven and shaped much of our knowledge concerning collaboration and communication activities and have informed the design of technologies to support these activities.

What is on the conference program for CSCW 2002?

The conference has a number of research papers that may be of interest to AAA members. Some themes that are addressed by papers in the technical program include:

The papers program takes places from Monday, 18 November to Wednesday, 20 November 2002.

In addition to the papers, the conference has a number of workshops and tutorials that may be of interest to AAA members:

Workshops (Saturday, 16 November):

Tutorials (Saturday, 16 November and Sunday, 17 November):

Please see the workshops and tutorials sections of the conference program for more information.

How could AAA members benefit from attending CSCW 2002?

AAA members who are interested in the role of technology in people's lives, the relationship between work and technology, collaboration and communication issues or are just interested in a multi-disciplinary research community will enjoy attending the CSCW conference. The workshops, tutorials, and papers cover a wide variety of topics and interests. Furthermore, the size of the conference allows a great deal of interaction between participants.
