CSCW Notes is a new category of the technical program. The goal is to increase the diversity of the technical program by encouraging new types of submissions. CSCW Notes aims to bring research into the CSCW community that is relevant and original, but that might not fit well within the traditional long papers program.

CSCW Notes are designed to be more succinct and focused than long papers and will not be expected to have all the traditional elements of a CSCW long paper submission. They are limited to 4 pages and will follow the same deadlines as long papers.

CSCW Notes will be similar to the traditional, 10-page long papers in the following ways:

  • They will be rigorously peer reviewed and evaluated on the basis of originality, significance of the contribution to the field, quality of research, quality of writing and contribution to conference program diversity.
  • They will be published in the main conference proceedings and the ACM Digital Library.
  • They will be presented by the author(s) at the conference.

CSCW Notes will be different from the traditional, 10-page long papers in the following ways:

  • They will be a maximum of 4 pages.
  • They will be more focused and succinct than a long paper.
  • Submissions are not expected to have all the traditional elements of a CSCW long paper submission. For example, notes on applications are not expected to cover the entire iterative design cycle (observation, design, implementation, evaluation, etc.). Rather, submissions can go into depth in one of these areas.
  • CSCW Notes are not expected to include an extensive discussion of related work. However, CSCW Notes should be situated with respect to closely related work.

Examples of potential topics of CSCW Notes are:

  • A new implementation approach that addresses a significant technical issue in CSCW systems (without extensive design or evaluation of the implementation).
  • The design of a new interaction technique that supports groups (without extensive implementation or evaluation of the technique).
  • A new methodology for studying CSCW systems that the authors believe the CSCW community should consider and discuss (without extensive evaluation of the methodology).
  • A case study of the use of a CSCW system in a domain not typically studied by CSCW researchers.
  • An analysis of a specific situation that could benefit from CSCW support, especially situations that CSCW researchers typically don't consider.
  • A follow-up paper based on a previously published paper. The CSCW Note could publish additional findings that are interesting, but that wouldn't warrant an entire long paper. For example, the original paper might have described, in depth, the implementation and evaluation of a system that resulted in two design recommendations. A CSCW Notes paper could provide information about what happened when the design recommendations were implemented and evaluated.

CSCW Notes submissions should be no longer than 4 pages, including the abstract, all figures, and references. Submissions should include an abstract of no more than 100 words. In addition, submissions should be anonymous: all authors' names and affiliations should be removed.

CSCW Notes submissions should be formatted according to the ACM SIG Proceedings Template. (Please note that this template is slightly different than the ACM SIGCHI template.)

Final versions of papers should be formatted according to the instructions from the proceedings publisher, Sheridan Printing Company, Inc., available at http://www.sheridanprinting.com/typedept/cscw.htm

CSCW 2004 Notes must be submitted online at the ACM SIGCHI conference site. You will need to register at the site if you do not already have an account. After logging on, follow the "new submissions" link to make your submission.

All submissions must be received by 5pm Pacific Time on Friday, March 19, 2004.

Submissions received after this date will not be considered. All submissions will be acknowledged by email. Any questions about submitting a paper should be directed to cscw2004-notes@acm.org.

Authors who are submitting CSCW Notes are also encouraged to consider submitting videos that illustrate their work. Please refer to the Call for Videos.
