We are no longer accepting applications for Student Volunteers for CSCW 2004.
Student volunteers are essential to the success of the CSCW conference. In return for 20 hours of volunteer work, student volunteers receive a number of benefits including free conference registration, one free tutorial of their choice, a cool t-shirt, and a complimentary Conference Reception ticket. While the volunteer duties are not always glamorous, they do provide opportunities to meet and interact with CSCW 2004 contributors, attendees, and other student volunteers. Students often report that the 'social networks' they build from these interactions are the greatest benefit of being a volunteer.
Lottery information
The lottery has been run and we have sent out emails to all accepted and waitlisted Student Volunteers. We had over 200 applications for 25 positions. If you are on the waitlist, don't give up hope--in the past, we have seen a lot of movement as people's situations change. What should a Student Volunteer expect? Here's an online handbook designed for CSCW'98.
Registration
Registration is now open for all accepted SVs. Please DO NOT register through the main registration website. Instead, we have sent all accepted SVs email instructions on how to register. If you are an accepted SV and you have not received that email, please contact us.
Email Lists
We have created email lists for all accepted and waitlisted student volunteers. If you received an initial email stating you were either accepted or placed on the waitlist and you have not received any further emails, please send us a note at cscw2004-svchairs@acm.org so that we can get you on the right list. It is also possible that your email client might flag these emails as spam.
Visa Information
If you are an accepted SV and you need a visa to enter the United States, please contact us immediately so we can start processing. Depending on where you are coming from and your nationality, getting a visa can be difficult, but we will work as quickly and efficiently as possible so that it is not a problem.
Housing Information
CSCW 2004 is not providing any 'official housing' for student volunteers, but we do know that Chicago is a very large city with many affordable hotels and hostels. We are working on creating a list of affordable places close to public transportation. Look for it soon.
