Special Events
Whether it's discussing a poster, having lunch together, or even spending a day with other participants at the zoo, participants will have plenty of opportunities for discussion, networking and fun at CSCW.
A Day at the Park: Balboa Park & Zoo Sunday, November 9
We are planning a special optional activity for CSCW participants who arrive early but are not in Sunday workshops. On Sunday, November 9, we will have shuttle service to and from the park and group-discount passes for the San Diego Zoo. More information is on the Things To Do and See page.
Doctoral Colloquium Beach Bonfire Mixer Sponsored by IBM Sunday 19:30-22:00
Location: on the beach at the conference hotel
Meet the students of the Doctoral Colloquium on the beach to learn about emerging results from their research in the field of CSCW. Greet other conference attendees and look on each other's badge for topics to ask about as you interact during this mixer event and throughout the conference. Note: San Diego prohibits alcohol on San Diego's beaches and coastal parks including the beach at the conference hotel.
Lunch-time Transportation Monday & Wednesday 11:30-15:30
As a consequence of the conference hotel's location within the beautiful Mission Bay Park, there are no other restaurants within walking distance of the conference. Therefore, the conference is providing shuttle bus service from 11:30-15:30 Monday and Wednesday (Tuesday lunch is a catered Beach Barbeque at Playa Park, just north of the hotel. See more details about Tuesday lunch below.). As with all conference special events, the buses are available for registered conference attendees and others holding an accompanying person registration.
The Old Town bus will take you to the corner of Congress & Twiggs (approximate travel time of 15 minutes), where you will find more than 30 restaurants in this historic area. From here, you can also take a trolley to Little Italy or the Gaslamp Quarter.
The Gaslamp Quarter bus will take you to the corner of 1st & G street (approximate travel time of 20-30 minutes) where you will find more than 150 restaurants, cafes and nightclubs with a region of 24 city blocks.
See the conference map (online or in the conference program) for bus drop off / pick up locations.
CSCW Town Hall Meeting Monday 18:30-20:00
Location: Sorrento + San Marino
The CSCW Town Hall Meeting is a time dedicated for the CSCW steering committee to interact with members of the CSCW community who will attend CSCW 2008, harnessing their interests, and addressing
their concerns about future directions of the CSCW conference. At this meeting, the process for identifying new members of the CSCW steering committee will be discussed with attendees.
Demonstrations and Interactive Posters Reception Monday 19:30-22:00
Location: Terrazza Ballroom, Foyer, Monte Carlo + St. Tropez, Marseilles + Las Palmas
Come to this reception for the chance to interact directly with researchers and practitioners who are presenting demonstrations and results of cutting edge ideas in collaborative systems and research. The event will include reception-style buffet food. No-host cash bars will be available.
Beach Barbeque Lunch Tuesday 12:00-15:00
Location: Playa Park, North of conference hotel
Walk just north of the hotel to Playa Park and join the conference for a Barbeque on the Beach prepared by famous Smokin' Joe Jones Barbeque Company. Relax on the beach with new friends and colleagues and savor the succulent flavors of your choice from BBQ Chicken, Beef Brisket, Green Salad, BBQ Beans, Corn, Peach Cobbler and a Soda.
See the map at the end of the conference program for the exact location of the Tuesday lunch - or just walk north of the hotel and sniff for barbeque.
Conference Banquet Tuesday 18:30-22:00
Location: Sea World - Nautilus Pavilion and Penguin Encounter
Buses begin running from the conference hotel port de cher at 18:30.
The conference banquet is always a popular event where you mix, mingle and catch-up with friends new and old. A short bus trip will take us to Sea World where we will have a banquet dinner at the Nautilus Pavilion. This location has plenty of space for indoor or outdoor dinner conversations; but since it is an evening event you might want your sweatshirt. While at the banquet, take a moment to walk through Penguin Encounter. Remember your banquet ticket!
