How I arrived at my present job (academic and other influences): I am finishing up a degree in CIS now. I started as a student employee for the University in 1995, shortly there after I was offered a full time position.
How I organize my day: I usually arrive at work at about 7:30 and plan my day then. I try and allocate the first hour for email and telephone responses. I try and break up the day in to two segments. The first half of the day is designated as handling day-to-day maintenance...making sure things are running as they should. The second half of the day (which usually ends up as the last 1/4) I try to spend on long term projects and service development.
Amount of time spent working daily (at home and office):
During the school year:
9 hours at the office
3 hours at home (give or take)
During breaks and summer:
10 - 11 hours at the office
2 - 3 hours at home
Weekends are time for my family.....I try and keep work a
monday-to-friday endeavor.
What I do to get myself thinking creatively: Read and Relax. If I get stuck on something, I put it down and let my brain work on it in the background.
My problem-solving strategy: I find problems are easily understood when you break them down to a bunch of small problems. If you break it down far enough you begin to see the light.
What I do to relieve stress: Spend time with the family, Ski. When all else fails....head to the ocean. Read.
My hero, mentor, or person I most admire and why: My parents. What other answer could there be?
What I do to mentor those who work for me: I try to be as helpful in all aspects that I can. I give employees the freedom to explore avenues they feel might help the College or University.
How a negative event changed my life in a positive way: I am going in to my 7 year of undergraduate study. That's negative. The positive side is that it has allowed me to get more experience out of my time at OSU. There aren't too many recent graduates with 4 years of full time / real world experience. I hope it allows me to bring something else to the table.
One event or decision in my life I wish I could go back and change: None. Everything I have lived through and every decision I have made makes up who I am today. To change an event would be to change me.
What inspires, motivates, or gets me excited about my job on a daily basis: The idea that a lot of people rely on me to do my job so that they can do theirs.
Biography: Will receive a degree in Computer and Informational Sciences from The Ohio State University, Columbus, OH in 1999. Hope to move career out of the university environment and in to the medical domain. My interests include high speed networking and high availability computing. Unfortunately no papers/articles to this point....but then again I don't have my Ph.D.
