ACM Crossroads Student Guest Editor Application Form

A guest editor is a student who has advanced or expert knowledge or experience in the theme for a given issue of Crossroads. The student guest editor must help solicit articles for the issue by sending email to prospective authors; be able to make intelligent comments while reviewing the potential articles; able to help with technical editing of selected articles; and able to write a one-page introduction to the issue. All work is conducted online via email and the web. Length of service is about 8 months, with about 2 hours a week of work involved (some weeks none, some weeks much more). The student guest editor will receive a copy of the issue they help with, and will be mentioned in the staff listing for that issue.

Please see the online publishing schedule for details about deadlines during our publishing cycle.

NOTE: Only students are allowed to serve as Guest Editor. In addition, you must remain a student until the issue is published. If you will not be a student until the issue is published, please do not apply to be a student guest editor. Instead, send us email that you want to be a reviewer for that issue. We welcome faculty involvement in the form of additional reviewers and mentors for our authors. If this interests you, please send email to crossroads@acm.org.

Which issue do you want to apply for?

Please respond to the following questions with a couple of sentences each. There is space for any additional comments you'd like to make about yourself at the bottom of the form. Note that you are required to answer EACH question.

1. What sort of time commitment will you be able to give to Crossroads during the time required to create the edition of Crossroads you're applying for (approximate hours a week)? Please be realistic.

2. How long would you be able to serve as editor for the edition you're applying for (We need about 8 months, which begins about 6 months before the submission deadline and ends about 2 months after the submission deadline. Note that you must be a student during this entire period)?

3. What editorial experience do you have, if any?

4. Have you published any papers in this area? (Note: It is NOT a requirement to have published in the area). If yes, please list the citation information for those publications.

5. Please list at least 3 citations of papers/books that you feel are important in the featured area (other than your own publications):

6. Describe any practical experience in the featured field (e.g. in academia or industry).

7. Describe the kinds of articles you'd like to see in this edition. Please be specific, listing topic areas or specific research questions.

8. Is there any miscellaneous additional information that you would like to tell us so that we can make the best possible decision?

9. Please send an ASCII files containing a writing sample to crossroads@acm.org. The sample should be at least 800 words long, and should be about a computing-related subject. The best possible sample would be about the issue theme for which you are applying to be a guest editor.
