ACM Crossroads Student Editorial Board Application Form

Editorial Board members for Crossroads must be students and must be student members of the Association for Computing Machinery. What does an Editorial Board Member do? Read the Staff Policy document we have online. NOTE: All positions with Crossroads are VOLUNTEER. No one on staff gets paid. If you are interested in more than one position, please fill out an application for each position separately.

Which Editorial Board position are you applying for?

NOTE: Only students are allowed to serve on the Editorial Board. We welcome faculty involvement in the form of additional reviewers and mentors for our authors. If this interests you, please send email to crossroads@acm.org.


Please respond to the following questions with a couple of sentences each. There is space for any additional comments you'd like to make about yourself at the bottom of the form. Note that you are required to answer EACH question.

1. What sort of time commitment will you be able to give to Crossroads (approximate hours a week)? Please be realistic.

2. How long would you be able to serve on the Editorial Board? (In other words, are you planning to graduate and get a job soon? We really would prefer that you are available for at least 12 months.)

3. What editorial experience do you have, if any?

4. Why would you like to be the person selected for this Board position? AND...

  • If applying for Business Manager/Assistant Business Manager, ALSO answer: "Part of the job of the BusMan is to come up with a business plan, and to contact potential advertisers and sponsors. Pick a possible sponsor for Crossroads and explain why you picked it, and how you would approach them."
  • If applying for General Editor, ALSO submit a short piece of your writing to crossroads@acm.org. It can be in any field and in any subject, TWO pages maximum.
  • If applying for Graphics Editor/Assistant Graphics Editor, ALSO answer: What graphics packages can you use? Please write below the URL of your online portfolio of graphics that you have created.
  • If applying for Managing Editor, ALSO answer in 1 paragraph: What do you think is the most important part of managing a virtual organization (like Crossroads)? Consider that 1) board members never meet in person 2) board members don't get paid -- how do you motivate people to meet their commitments?
  • If applying for Publicity Manager/Assistant Publicity Manager, ALSO answer: How would you publicize Crossroads? Give at least two detailed methods.

5. What skills and/or added value would you bring to Crossroads that are relavant to the position? Do you know HTML, CGI, or Java, for example?

6. Describe the kinds of articles/graphics/ads you'd like to see in Crossroads. In other words, what is your vision for the future of Crossroads? What should Crossroads be like in 5 years? How should we get there?

7. Is there any miscellaneous additional information that you would like to tell us so that we can make the best possible decision?
