WIBNI we could contact the authors of some of the papers? For
instance, I'm pretty interested in knowing what's happened with the
development of the DynAC model (Crossroads, winter 1997. Extending
Java to Support Shared Resource Protection and Deadlock Detection in
Threads Programming). Unfortunately the paper doesn't provide any link
to reach the authors nor the DynAC model itself. In the conclusion
they say: "We hope to correct the performance decline that we observed
when the Model was used,...", did they make it? could I take a look
at the source code of the model? could I use it? It sound like a very
fine idea, but AFAIK, that's all it is. I'm taking a course in
distributed computing, using Java and we would like to test the model
(maybe even help to improve it).
OTHO, Crossroads it's great!. Keep up the good work. :-)

I am impressed with the extent of the Crossroads publication. The student involvement at my college is minimal so I appriciate the ACM student contributors even more.

I look forward to defeating whole nations in ACM programming competition. (In the most professional manner of course ; ) I think organizations like the ACM are very inspirational to programmers. Having local, regional, and international competitions is very motivational, and an opportunity for all of us to show what we can do.

I am bilingual english/spanish and I am positive I could be an asset as a liason between your company and the South American area in the computer market.
I think that the ACM magazine is simply professional, serious, in other words, outstanding.

I've been attempting to programe games with Visual Basic
for a few years and I find Visual Basic hard to work with
(as far as games anyway). I want to get the C language as
soon as I can. I have studied a book on game programming
for C+, "Learn Game Programming in 21 days". I love game
programming very much, but trying to do it with Visual
Basic fries my brain. Well anyway, I'm trying to find info
on Job opportunities in this area. I hope to be able to work
at home, but in a few years I will be more flexible. I'm
pressently trying to build a 3D engine on my own. A type of
ray casting that I feel will produce graphics that are as
detailed as the programmer wishes. The only problem is, is
that it would seem that even in a small game world, since
every millimeter(of the world)or atom or whatever incroment
of measurment is used contains a dozen variables that define
it's exact color, transparency, solidity, light production
and brightness, etc, that the game would run super slow
unless it is used on a super fast processor(whitch is
probably why no one has created such an engine. It seems
possible, anyway. Well, I hope that I can get some info!

The Winter 1997 special issue on Java was good. The articles
on "Object Serialization" and "Threads" were good. JNI seems
to be a necessary evil, since it violates platform independence
and yet is required for practical applications to make use of
legacy C/C++ code. Every one is all praise for Java. Its
capabilities are truly promising. I wished you included an
article discussing the performance, capabilities and current
shortcomings of Java. Java seems to be in a state of development
still. New features are being added and new versions being
released often. Let us hope that this language does not follow
the trend set by languages such as PL/I which failed because
features were being added to make it a one-stop language.

all ACM publications. I"m a student at Northeastern Univ. in Boston, and
I only recently started reading some of the stories and I like them.
Is there a print version or a email mailing list or any way that one can
find out about the publications w/o having to always check the web page?
Thanks

The latest Java issue is great! For a java know-nothing
like myself, the first installment of the Practical Crash
Course in Java was just what I was looking for -- well
written and short enough that I was able to breeze through
it on a spare moment, something that doesn't happen with
a full sized text.
Thanks.

I enjoy the next generation of Java applications. I am working on my thesis with Java to implement a User Interface which is used to archieve Booch Lite's Object Oriented Diagram.
My first question : I cannot find a way to put an offscreen image to a Frame. Maybe it is quite simple .
