The Crossroads Crew met for the first time at the Big Event in Nashville. Pictured at right are Jonathan Stark, Lisa Ernst, Ron Krisko, Lorrie Cranor, and Saveen Reddy. The Crew took some time out in Nashville to check their email. Pictured at left are Crew members Sarah Burcham, Jonathan Stark, Scott MacDonald, and Laura McCarthy, joined by Hans Domjan and Mark Foltz.
The ACM's 1995 Big Event was almost the one year anniversary of the creation of Crossroads: The International ACM Student Magazine. The Crossroads' Road Crew took this chance to take a look at what we've accomplished, the problems we've encountered and solved, and where we are headed in the future.
The Big Event was also the first opportunity any of the editors have had to meet each other in person. Previously, all our communication had been through email and phone calls. The four editors who met at the Big Event discovered that face-to-face communication is still hard to beat.
Along with attending the events that the other students attended at the Big Event, the Crossroads gang was asked to give an on-the-fly birds-of-a-feather session. There were a few students there, a few professionals, and a few of the ACM's HQ people and ACM Membership Board members. They asked a lot of questions and offered many compliments.
The Crossroads Crew also met with a representative from a software company about possible sponsorship. The representative was very excited, encouraging, and supportive of our efforts so far. No formal decision has been made at this time, but the details are being worked out. We are looking into the possibility of mailing printed copies of Crossroads to student chapters, all student members, or possibly all ACM members.
While we were meeting, Stuart Zweben, President of ACM, stopped by to look around at the fancy room that we were meeting in and said, ``Oh, obviously you guys have connections.'' We all laughed, because we ended up in that room simply because it was the only one open at the time of our meeting.
Following the Big Event, the editors discussed the many suggestions we received and selected the issue themes for next year. The following are the issue themes and rough draft deadlines.
Issue #: Theme: Rough Draft Deadline: Issue 2.1 Networking June 15, 1995 Issue 2.2 Law and Ethics September 1, 1995 Issue 2.3 Software Engineering November 16, 1995 Issue 2.4 Security February 5, 1996
Articles on other topics are also welcome. We are particularly interested in articles about computer science careers and descriptions of interesting ACM student chapter activities. Submission information is available from the Crossroads WWW site or from crossroads@acm.org.
The Crossroads Road Crew members want to personally thank all of the students who participated in the Big Event this year, and the ACM board members and staff who have supported the Crossroads magazine since its first issue. We are particularly grateful to Lisa Ernst for all the work she has done for us. We are encouraged by the support we have received and look forward to another great year.
