ACM Computing Week
February 14-February 20,1996
ACM Computing Week 96 includes four conferences: The 24th Annual ACM
Computer Science Conference (CSC), ACM SIGCAS Workshop on Computers
and the Quality of Life, ACM SIGCSE Symposium on Computer Science
Education, and the ACM Symposium on Applied Computing. For students,
ACM CW 96 offers all of the above plus career-focused programs,
including site visits to local corporations, the ACM Career Workshops,
guru lunches and numerous opportunities to meet the luminaries of the
field, past, present, and future.
Computing Week 96 features a number of special events, and a "first"
for the computer chess world! Experience the excitement of the ACM
International Collegiate Programming Contest, the ACM Student Poster
Forum, the ACM A. M. Turing Lecture, the ACM Awards Banquet, and a
six-match chess challenge between Garry Kasparov, the world's chess
champion and the IBM's Deep Blue computing chess system.
Big Event '96 "Coming Back Together"
Saturday, February 17th and Sunday, February 18th
This event is a two day program of leadership workshops specifically
designed for local unit leaders. The program is arranged to provide
the attendees with a variety of forums to increase their skills and
share their knowledge and experience of chapter activities with other
local unit leaders. Student chapter leaders are encourage to attend.

Student Posters
The 1996 ACM Computing Week (CW96) Student Poster Forum will consist
of two categories, graduate and undergraduate, with prizes awarded in
each category based on judging during CW96. Poster presentations will
be evaluated on the quality and significance of the work, and the
quality and clarity of both the oral and visual presentation. Four
prizes of $500 each will be awarded in each of the two categories to
the highest quality poster presentations as evaluated by the judges.

ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest Finals Sponsored by
Microsoft Corporation Saturday, February 17th
The ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC) is a
two-tier competition in which colleges and universities from 17
international regions compete for a chance to participate in the
finals held during ACM Computing Week. CW '96 attendees are invited
to view the contest from the Spectators Gallery. The winning teams
will be announced at the ACM Awards Banquet Saturday evening. For more

Career Program - Site Visits Planned to Philadelphia Area Computing
Industries
As many as six excursions are being planned to companies
in the Philadelphia region for which computing is a substantial
activity. These half-day trips will involve tours of facilities and
presentations by technical and human resources personnel of each
corporation visited. All trips will leave from the Philadelphia
Marriott hotel (home site of CW 96). All trips are free to student
registrants for Computing Week as well as full registrants for any of
the four Computing Week conferences.
Career Workshops
Jack Wilson has been invited back to conduct another series of Free
Career Workshops and Resume Clinics. All CW '96 attendees are welcome
to participate. Those with specific resume and career questions can
sign up at the Workshop for a 15-minute, one-on-one Resume Clinic
session. For exact schedules of the career clinics and workshop see

UPE Annual Meeting and Reception
Friday, February 16, 5:30 - 6:30 p.m.
Upsilon Pi Epsilon (the computer science honor society) will hold its
annual meeting at the Marriott Hotel during CW96. UPE will present
cash awards and plaques to many ACM International Collegiate
Programming Contest teams during the meeting. All UPE members and CW
registrants are invited to attend.
Student Volunteer Program
Full-time students may apply to work as volunteers during ACM
Computing Week 96 in Philadelphia in exchange for a free CW96 student
registration. A volunteer must work 6 hours on one of the days of
