The Contest Details:

  1. You must be an ACM Student Member (please see exceptions,) 18 years of age or older, to be eligible to participate in the Quest for Java™. This contest is open to ACM Student Members who are legal residents of any one of the following countries: Argentina, Australia, Canada, Colombia, Finland, France, Germany, Holland, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Taiwan (R.O.C.), the United Kingdom, and the U.S. If you're not already a Student Member, you must join ACM and register for the contest by February 20, 1999. You can join ACM and register for the Quest right now!

  2. You must register no later than February 20, 1999.

  3. Once you register, we'll add you to the "jquest listserv" so you can receive important Contest announcements. Contest updates will also be posted on the website. All Quest registrants will receive a free ACM/IBM 1999 Quest for Java T-shirt.

  4. There are no software requirements for Quest 99. You'll be able to submit your applet anytime in the month of March, 1999 (March 1 through March 31, 1999). You'll be sent email describing the procedure for submitting your applet. You must provide ACM with the URL for your applet and applet documentation. After March 31, 1999, you will not be able to make any changes to your applet.

  5. All entries must be 100% Java and the use of native classes or 3rd party libraries is not permitted.

  6. Judging will take place in April, 1999.

  7. Winners will be notified in May, 1999, by the Quest Contest Administrator, Marden-Kane. Winners will be contacted via registered postal mail as well as by email. Since students may no longer be at school in May 1999, during the submission period all contestants will be asked to provide ACM with their contact information for May 1999. The Contest Administrator will contact winners directly to verify their name and address.

  8. Assuming the process of contacting winners and verifying their names and addresses happens quickly and smoothly, the names of the winners and, where available, the URL where their applet resides, will be posted on the JQuest website. (Take a look at some of the winners from the past Quest for Java contests.) The official winners' listing will be posted on the JQuest website in June, 1999.

  9. To avoid the problems that arise with offering and shipping hardware and/or software prizes, for this year's Quest there are only cash prizes, in the form of American Express Gift Checks. You can use these checks everywhere, for anything you may want to buy.

  10. All winners will receive the official 1999 Quest for Java Winner Logo.
