New Career Resource Available to Spanish-Speaking Students

CSTA Publishes Spanish Language Version of its Popular Computing Careers Brochure

New York, NY, November 7, 2007 – The Computer Science Teachers Association (CSTA) is reaching out to Hispanic teachers and students with a Spanish-language edition of its popular brochure, "Imagine Your Future in Computing."  Available in print and online, this colorful brochure encourages students to consider computing careers in a wide range of fields, including software development, mobile communications, medicine and the environment.

CSTA is a membership organization that works to support and promote the teaching of computer science at the K-12 level by providing opportunities for teachers and students to better understand computing disciplines.  It was launched by the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) to ensure that teachers have the tools they need to get students interested in computer science careers.

"More than 10,000 English language copies of our computing careers brochure have been distributed across the country; we’re eager to put this resource into the hands of Spanish-speaking students in a more accessible way," said Chris Stephenson, executive director of the Computer Science Teachers Association.

The Hispanic community is severely underrepresented when it comes to computer science.  Data from the 2007 AP Report to the Nation show that only 6.6 percent of Hispanic or Latino students completed an Advanced Placement (AP) computer science examination in 2006, compared to 57.8 percent of white students who took the exam.  Overall, the total number of U.S. students enrolled in AP computer science has steadily declined from 23,459 students in 2002 to 19,601 in 2006.  This trend has caused concern at the university level and beyond that there will not be enough employees to fill a growing forecast of future jobs available in computing and other technological fields.

According to CSTA equity chair Michelle Hutton, reaching students who are not traditionally attracted to computing is a primary goal for CSTA. "The demand for bright and talented young people trained in computing disciplines is increasing rapidly.  Given the future workforce demands, it is critically important to eliminate the major racial and ethnic gaps that exist within the current computing pipeline.  We need to demonstrate to all students the incredible breadth of computing career opportunities that are available for everyone," said Hutton.
