ACM OPENS BRANCH OFFICE IN CHINA

Beijing Office to Serve Growing Needs of Global Computing Community

New York, January 10, 2008 – ACM has opened a branch office in China in partnership with Tsinghua University in Beijing to meet the growing needs of its professional and student members in this active region of the world. The new office further strengthens ACM’s longstanding legacy of providing valuable resources that benefit the global computing community. It also offers added convenience for ACM members in China to access ACM’s broad array of products and services, and to conduct transactions using local currency.

“China’s information technology (IT) profile in the global economy is growing,” said John R. White, ACM Chief Executive Officer. “China’s investment in science and technology is focused on creating an innovative nation that is driven by both basic and applied research as well as commercialization of science and technology. ACM has the educational and career resources to help Chinese-based researchers, practitioners, and students achieve their professional goals in this emerging environment.”

White noted that ACM has witnessed this expansion of activity in China from a variety of ACM events in the region. They include successful participation by Chinese universities in several recent annual ACM International Collegiate Programming Contests (ICPC), and a number of recent computing conferences held in Asia. “In establishing this new office in Beijing, ACM offers a convenient location to raise awareness of computing and IT as drivers of innovation, and to serve the needs of the professional and student members in this dynamic country,” White said.

ACM currently has more than 800 members in China as well as several chapters representing professional members and Special Interest Groups. Recent events in China include the 2007 ACM Special Interest Group on Management of Data (SIGMOD) conference, and the Symposium on Principles of Database Systems, sponsored by SIGMOD, and ACM’s Special Interest Groups on Algorithms and Computation Theory (SIGACT), and Artificial Intelligence (SIGART). Upcoming events include the International World Wide Web Conference, organized in cooperation with ACM Special Interests Groups on eCommerce (SIGecom) and Hypertext, Hypermedia, and Web (SIGWEB); and the International Conference on Computer Architecture, sponsored in part by the Special Interest Group on Computer Architecture (SIGARCH).

The ACM China Office Member Services Manager is Xie YuYuan. She is assisted by Wenguang Chen, Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Technology at Tsinghua University.

ACM offers a wide range of resources to help computing and IT professionals and students advance their career interests. These resources include the ACM Digital Library; hundreds of online books and courses available to ACM members for no charge; individualized mentoring program; Special Interest Groups representing critical aspects and applications of computing; global networking opportunities; and prominent recognition awards.

An exclusive Web site has been established for ACM members in China at http://china.acm.org for easy access to member benefits, services, and programs.
