Why is the Report Online?

The SIGCHI Executive Committee voted to make the so-called "Lime Green" report available electronically. This web version is the "best online version" available.

How Was the Report Brought Online?

The original document was written using Microsoft Word. Bill Hefley imported that into Framemaker for the printed report. He exported RTF so that Gary Perlman could create an online version. A plain text version has been online for several years, but to try to make it more useful, it was converted to HTML.

What's Special in the Online Version?

The main goal of the translation was to maintain the content and format of the original report. In some cases, the information has been rendered slightly differently than in the printed report:

The information could not be formatted exactly as in the original without making assumptions about which web browser was being used by the reader. Such information was usually presented as preformatted text.
The information could be formatted in HTML in a way that better represented its structure. HTML definition lists were used extensively.

The clickable table of contents is probably the most special part; separate detailed tables of contents are in each chapter/appendix.

Links were added where they were obviously useful (e.g., references to chapters, figures, and tables), but not where they would have been very difficult to insert (e.g., links to all references). The links on the Report's "home page" lead you ACM, SIGCHI, the ACM Catalog, and even the page where you can order the printed Report.

Since the page numbers of the printed report are lost in the online version, they have been added to important section headings in curly braces (e.g., 3.4 Course Descriptions {p. 38}).
