Human-Computer Interaction in the New Millennium

ACM Transactions on Computer-Human Interaction (TOCHI) will publish a special issue titled HCI in the New Millennium as the first issue of 2000. John M. Carroll of Virginia Tech's Center for Human-Computer Interaction will be Guest Editor.

Human-computer interaction (HCI) is the intersection between the social and cognitive sciences, on the one hand, and computer science and technology, on the other. HCI researchers analyze and design specific interaction technologies (e.g., displays and pointing devices, Internet browsers). They study and improve the processes of technology development (e.g., usability evaluation, design rationale). They develop and evaluate new applications (e.g., desktop conferencing, software design environments). Through the past two decades, HCI has progressively integrated scientific concerns with the engineering goal of improving the usability of computers, established a body of technical knowledge and methodology, and contributed broadly to the development of new computer technologies and applications.

As we contemplate the dawn of a new millennium, we should ask where HCI is going. What are the critical technical challenges and opportunities that will define HCI research and development work beyond the year 2000? What are the approaches that will sustain and enhance the vitality and effectiveness of HCI in this new era? How will HCI be different from and similar to what it is today? These questions can be addressed with respect to HCI taken broadly, or with respect to narrower technical subdomains within HCI (for example, groupware, or even more narrowly, real-time collaborative support).

This special issue is explicitly prospective; we seek visionary analyses. However, papers must meet the high standards of technical quality for Transactions articles. Thus, visions of the future should be clearly and technically articulated, and soundly argued. The basis for a visionary analysis of the future is a careful and creative analysis of the past and present.
