Annual Report, ACM Technical Standards Committee prepared by Jim Moore, Chairman Accomplishments: - - John Klensin represents ACM in the ANSI Information System Standards Board. He is Vice-Chair of the Board. - - We redesigned our Web page to provide information about the external (standards-related) and internal (SIGs and Pubs) liaisons that TSC members provide. - - We published 9 short articles on a variety of standards-related subjects on our Web page. - - We discussed a "statement of principles" regarding standardization. Although this discussion did not result in a product, it did shape opinions and attitudes of individual members as they dealt with recent issues including the applications of Sun Microsystems and Object Management Group (OMG) to be recognized by ISO/IEC JTC1 as submitters of "publicly available specifications" (PAS). - - We provided advice to SIGGraph and ACM staff regarding the problems potential in conducting standardization activities in close association with SIGGraph. - - We are investigating the virtual computing standards education program to determine its fit with ACM interests. Liaisons: As a resource to ACM, our membership provides liaison to the following standards-related organizations: - - ANSI ISSB - - IEEE CS SESC - - IEEE Standards Board - - IEEE P1178 - - IEEE P1484 - - ISO/IEC JTC1 - - ISO/IEC JTC1/SC24 - - ISO/IEC JTC1/SC22 - - ISO/IEC JTC1 Java Study Group - - ISO/IEC JTC1/SC7 - - OMG - - CEN Medical Informatics Publications: An (incomplete) list of recent publications by our members includes: - - Steve Carson, Information Technology: The Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML) ISO Bulletin, Volume 28, Number 9, September 1997 - - Steve Carson, Standards Pipeline, Computer Graphics, Volume 30, Number 3, August 1996 - - Steve Carson, Standards Pipeline: VRML 97 and BIIF, Computer Graphics, Volume 30, Number 4, November 1996 - - Steve Carson, Standards Pipeline: The OpenGL Specification, Computer Graphics, Volume 31, Number 2, May 1997 - - Steve Carson, Standards Pipeline: PNG, VRML 97, BIIF and Imaging Standards, Computer Graphics, Volume 31, Number 3, August 1997 - - Steve Carson (with Rikk Carey and Richard F.
