We would like to inform our readers about an important and interesting print-and-Web publication called Digital Horizons, edited by our good friend, Mihai Nadin, author of the provocative book "The Civilization of Illiteracy." Here is Professor Nadin's description of the project: "The digital revolution gave rise to a whole cottage industry of 'how-to' publications and all kinds of reports on the latest greatest software and hardware. The frenzy of innovation has resulted in a huge gap between what becomes possible and the know-how required for making the possible happen. During the technology rush, the few who probed these developments received short shrift. Today we are going through a time of reassessment. If there is one thing that those who succeeded and those who failed would agree upon, it is the need to deal with the fundamental themes of the digital revolution. "The book series Digital Horizons arose from the need for reassessment. It will serve as a forum for rigorous discussion of the various aspects of the digital age -- cognitive, aesthetic, information science, visualization, among others -- leading to better understanding of the new human condition in the digital age. International in scope, multidisciplinary in its perspective and approach, the series premiered with "Coherence and Difference." The author, Steffen Klein (DaimlerChrysler Research), acquired experience in new media at a company that very early understood its impact. He pursued a Ph.D. in the Computational Design Program, University of Wuppertal. The next two titles to appear are "Semiotics and Informatics: An Attempt at a Foundation" (Frieder Nake and P. Bogh Andersen)," and "VisuOS. A Visual Operating Software System for Knowledge Processing" (Clemens Lango)." In the future, a print-and-Web-hybrid publication will be pursued in order to allow for wider dissemination and short editorial cycles, while maintaining a high standard of scholarship. Digital Horizons is published by Synchron (Heidelberg, and soon in the USA). Members of the editorial board are Peter Bogh Andersen (University of Aalborg, Denmark), Joseph Goguen (UC-San Diego), George Landow (University of Singapore, Brown University), Frieder Nake (University of Bremen), Clarisse Sieckenius de Souza ( PUC-Rio de Janeiro), and Mercedes Vilanova (University of Barcelona). Mihai Nadin is Editor-in-Chief). More information on Digital Horizons can be found at www.dhorizons.org. A forum for discussion of published titles will soon be put in place. Professionals from all fields who would like to publish in Digital Horizons should contact one of the editors, or the publisher, with a detailed proposal (theme and its significance, authors, chapter titles, etc.).
