Kotaro Hirano, Yoshio Nakatani, Steve McCarty, Hisayuki Masui This article aims to bring together representative applications of mobile research in Japan from various perspectives including engineering, cognitive science, and education. First an infrastructure for mobile phones utilizing GPS (Global Positioning System) is developed in the first section, which is applicable to the following sections. A support system for disaster victims in unfamiliar environments and a driver support system considering spatial cognitive ability and its application to human navigation are detailed in the second and third sections. Finally in the fourth section, mobile-assisted English as a Foreign Language education is presented in terms of podcasting. These diverse applications have mobility in common, which in turn makes m-learning possible, extending a mobile infrastructure into new domains for ubiquitous learning. For future research the writers, who represent various disciplines and institutions in different areas of Japan, plan to collaborate further on the convergence of these technologies for m-learning.
