ACM Launches New Journal on Responsible Computing

ACM JRC Now Accepting Submissions

New York, NY, July 27, 2022 — ACM, the Association for Computing Machinery, announced it is now accepting submissions for a new publication, the ACM Journal on Responsible Computing (JRC). The launch of this new ACM journal reflects both the phenomenal growth of computing around the world and the profound impact computing technologies continue to have on so many aspects of life and society as a whole.

JRC will publish high-quality original research at the intersection of computing, ethics, information, law, policy, responsible innovation, and social responsibility from a wide range of convergent, interdisciplinary, multidisciplinary, and transdisciplinary perspectives. The editorial board welcomes papers using any or a combination of computational, conceptual, qualitative, quantitative, and other methods to make contributions to knowledge, methods, practice, and theory, broadly defined. JRC is now accepting papers in areas including:

  • Values and ethics in the design and evaluation of computing and information technology
  • Ethical and societal implications of computing and information technology
  • Public interest technology (information technology that serves the public interest)
  • Fairness, accountability, and transparency in computing and information technology
  • Computing, information, health, and wellbeing
  • Approaches to addressing threats such as adversarial machine learning, misinformation, and disinformation
  • Examples of how computing and information can be leveraged to achieve outcomes that benefit humanity

“Computing now impacts so many areas of our lives that a journal devoted to exploring the ethical and societal implications of our field is essential,” explained JRC Editor-in-Chief Kenneth R. Fleischmann, Professor in the School of Information at the University of Texas at Austin. “Computing professionals must be at the forefront of raising questions, conducting research, and organizing conferences about how the technologies we help develop can best serve humanity in a responsible way. Our vision for JRC is that it will be a home for outstanding research and a valued resource. We especially hope to attract papers that bring a convergent, interdisciplinary, multidisciplinary, and transdisciplinary perspective, and that include an orientation toward culturally relevant and situated ethical perspectives and human values.”

The first issue of JRC is slated to be published in 2023. In addition to EiC Fleischmann, the JRC editorial team includes five Senior Associate Editors, 25 Associate Editors and a ten-member Advisory Board. Reflecting ACM’s global membership, the JRC editorial team is made up of professionals working in countries including Australia, Austria, Brazil, Canada, China, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Korea, the Netherlands, Senegal, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
