STATEMENT

It is an honor and privilege to stand for the Chair of SIGCSE. We have been through some turbulent times in the past few years, now we can look forward to a great demand for computing education. There are now so many opportunities for SIGCSE to grow and flourish and lead the way in the global recovery post-pandemic.

I have previously served as Vice Chair and Member at Large of SIGCSE and now look forward to building on that experience to lead this exciting SIG and its members into this bright future. SIGCSE must accept the challenges as we enter this new era of continuing relevance in the curriculum and its teaching. Strengthening the respect of industry for future computing graduates will be a critical focus.

I believe I have the experience and ability based on leadership of many research projects, conferences and mentoring faculty at national and international levels drawing on my significant experience in department chair roles and curriculum development work. My most recent project was leading the ACM/IEEE Computing Curriculum CC2020 Task Force charting the future for all computing curricula. I now have the time, energy, and passion to chair SIGCSE over the next three years.

STATEMENT

It is my great pleasure to run for Chair of ACM SIGCSE. After years of research emphasizing exploiting computers to teach Mathematics with more insight, and already with a Ph.D., I took on CS studies and assisted in establishing the CS department at the Open University of Israel.

Since then, for over 30 years, I have been committed to CS education research and implication, particularly in introducing CS into schools. If elected as Chair of SIGCSE, I plan to continue making efforts to place CS on the same par as other scientific disciplines, if not on the same par as Math and Languages. In addition, I will strive to make SIGCSE more international, especially its flagship conference, the Technical Symposium. I will devote efforts to make ITiCSE the premiere European educational conference by trying to join with other smaller conferences. I will do my best to keep Inroads a high-level magazine and ACM conferences on a proper high level comparable to other computer science research conferences. I will not be able to achieve this on my own: I plan to work with all board members and whoever is willing to volunteer and assist in achieving the above-mentioned goals.

I am truly honored in being nominated to run for SIGCSE Vice-Chair. As an active SIGCSE member who truly believes in our community and its goals, I look forward to listening to the widest variety of opinions and making thoughtful and effective decisions in consultation with my colleagues. It is an exciting time for SIGCSE and likely the most dynamic period of our history. Conscientious and attentive leadership can help ensure the best future. I believe the most important asset we have is our members, who make SIGCSE such a strong community.

STATEMENT

I still remember boarding a plane bound for Chattanooga, heading to my first SIGCSE Technical Symposium in 2009. It was both exciting and daunting - I was eager to share my work and meet new people, but also trying to embark on a new research career in an unfamiliar area. What I found in Tennessee was a welcoming and supportive community who shared my passion for helping students succeed, and with whom I felt an instant kinship.

SIGCSE has been instrumental to my growth as an academic and so I’m honored to be nominated for Vice-Chair. I have a long history with SIGCSE sponsored and in-cooperation events, including as Co-Chair (ACE), Associate Program Chair (SIGCSE), Global Liaison, reviewer for the last decade, recipient of six best paper awards and as keynote speaker at the inaugural ACM Global Computing Education conference.

If elected to the SIGCSE Board, I would work to promote an inclusive and welcoming community that is supportive of members of all backgrounds. As Chair of the Australasian ACM SIGCSE Chapter, I would like to see further broadening of the reach of SIGCSE to an international audience, and much greater global participation with SIGCSE sponsored events.

STATEMENT

I attended my first SIGCSE conference in 1998. Since then, I have been an active member involved in varying capacities with the SIGCSE, ITiCSE, and CCSC-NE conferences. As an At-Large Member of the SIGCSE Board for these last few (challenging) years, I have witnessed the positive influence of SIGCSE within the global CS Ed community. I look forward to continuing with the Board in the position of Secretary.

In addition to my conference committee experiences, past board experience, and small liberal arts college perspective, I feel that my passion for ensuring that all groups are represented in the computing field is an asset to the committee. I have worked on several programs that:

  • give underrepresented groups the opportunity to explore computing as a dicipline
  • provide secondary school teacher education and support
  • provide mentoring to undergraduate students
  • demonstrate how service and social justice issues may be incorporated in computing classes

If I am elected, I will support all activities of the SIG to the best of my abilities.

STATEMENT

I am running for Secretary of the SIGCSE Board, because I believe we are at a critical juncture for SIGCSE, and I have the experience and passion necessary to help lead us through this time.

In the last 2+ years, the SIGCSE Board has navigated many significant challenges. Our flagship conference, the Technical Symposium, was cancelled hours before it started, and it nearly bankrupted us. The global pandemic has forced all our conferences to pivot online, forcing us to rethink how they provide engagement, networking, resource sharing, and professional development. It has certainly been a mixed blessing, making our conferences more affordable, archivable, and climate-change sustainable, at the cost of community-building and collaboration.

I led the creation, dissemination, and analysis of SIGCSE’s first “Conference Format Survey”. Based on the results, I have advocated that all conferences permanently allow hybrid attendance, and for the introduction of a new online-only conference for a global audience. I am excited to lead this new initiative.

I can think of no greater way to give back to the SIGCSE community that has given me so much for 20+ years, than to continue to serve on its Board as its Secretary.

STATEMENT

I have been involved in and benefited from the SIGCSE community for almost 25 years. Most recently, I served as Editor-in-Chief for ACM Inroads (along with Laurie King). We worked hard to broaden participation in the magazine’s leadership. I also served as an ex-officio member on the SIGPLAN Executive committee. From this experience, I've gained a good understanding of ACM and the operations of SIGs. In these roles, I've emphasized the fostering of an environment that welcomes a diversity of views, and I will continue to do so.

I think SIGCSE is approaching an articulation point that will require leadership with significant experience. Two concerns that will need consideration in the coming term are the after-effects of the pandemic and the growing impact of computing across disciplines. Can experience with hybrid and remote learning be used to increase participation in SIGCSE while still maintaining the SIGCSE community built upon in-person meetings? As computing impacts other disciplines more deeply, how do we support faculty in disciplines embracing computing? These are questions that the Executive Board will need to consider. I am prepared and enthusiastic to work with SIGCSE to navigate the issues ahead!

STATEMENT

I am grateful for the opportunity to run for SIGCSE Treasurer. As a researcher at a non-profit organization, I have managed more than 20 large federal grants. My research career involves being an intermediary between K-12 and higher education, community colleges and universities, researchers and practitioners, formal and informal education, and between computer and social scientists. This includes decades of research on CS education in K-12 and being on the Steering Committee for a workshop on the authentic inclusion of community colleges in broadening participation in computing.

I also hold a temporary position at the National Science Foundation’s Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) Directorate where I lead an evaluation of their Broadening Participation in Computing pilot. I have no prior “board” experience, but I have decades of experience working with (and learning from) K-12 educators, college and university faculty, administrators, and non-academic researchers. While I have seen increased attention to equity and inclusion in SIGCSE, I am interested in being part of the board to support efforts to ensure that SIGCSE is at the forefront of making gender and racial justice part of all computer science education and research.

  • Sharing templates of various applications (e.g., funding, vacancies) along with examples of successful ones.
  • Identifying sources of income to support academic activities and disseminate the information to the community via a centralised system.
  • Create conference tracks/workshops that support first-time authors (e.g., short papers, work in progress).
  • Create a reward system to increase participation in the reviewing process of conference publications.
  • Create a mentorship network to support academics/researchers at early stages in their careers with academic publications.

STATEMENT

I am honored by the nomination to represent the CS Ed community as a SIGCSE At-Large Member. I always felt welcomed in the SIGCSE community, which helped develop my research interests and connected me with a vibrant group of researchers. I wish to extend the same experience I had to others, and improve the participation of researchers, students, and practitioners from underrepresented communities such as Latin America, Africa, and Asia in all SIGCSE events.

While there are many efforts directed towards improving SIGCSE representativity, there is room for change and improvement. My efforts will focus on improving communication with other computing societies worldwide with better advertising and seek dialogue with those communities to better understand how SIGCSE could best serve them, and advance Computer Education (CS Ed) everywhere.

I will support the strengthening of local SIGCSE chapters. I believe that events such as Comp Ed could play a greater role, highlighting CS Ed research and SIGCSE actions, but also bringing local questions, issues, and nuances to the spotlight. Given the recent advances in hybrid conferences, I will advocate for more access to audiences worldwide and that their experience in the SIGCSE events be as close as possible to on-site attendants.

STATEMENT

I am honoured to be invited to stand for the SIGCSE Board. The Board requires members who have strong collaboration, communication, and project management skills, and be friendly and inclusive; qualities that I believe I possess. As International Liaison for the SIGCSE Conferences (2012, 2013), a presenter at ITiCSE conferences (2007-2016) and an invited workshop leader at the SIGCSE Global conference (2019), I witnessed the complexity of the Board's work.

The challenges of the Board going forward are how to support and connect with members globally during the pandemic. It remains important to maximise collaboration opportunities with industry and international partners and to share best practices. It is critical to connect and support faculty who are creative and confident users of computing, so they can inspire their students to explore the discipline. Through my role as ACM-W Australian Ambassador (2005-2011) and as ACM-W representative at the Global Gender and STEM project (2018,2019), I bring a deep knowledge of the lack of gender and cultural diversity in computing influenced by economic, educational, and social challenges that are present internationally obtained. I pledge my support to the Board in these challenging times.

I am excited about having been nominated for At-Large Member of the ACM SIGSCE board. The conferences organized by ACM SIGSCE have meant a lot for me developing as a researcher in computing education. With this position, I want to serve the community and learn more about ACM SIGSCE’s work.

As a member of the board, I will explore activities that can help promote the role of computing education and research for change towards a more just and sustainable world. One important factor are open conversations, in which new and diverse perspectives are welcome. As a member of the SIGSCE board, I will contribute to creating safe, inclusive, and creative meeting spaces. SIGSCE is already connecting people across the globe. It is important to consider who is part of the conversations, who is being heard and acknowledged, and who is not. What initiatives and conditions can help make SIGSCE conferences more diverse and relevant to the global society? I believe computing education can develop further through more collaborations among researchers and educators from within and outside computing education, academics, and non-academics. The latter should not be limited to the industry, but include municipalities, civil society organisations, etc.

STATEMENT

Intersectional computing, an emerging critical subfield, provides the field of computing with the necessary vocabulary, methods, and tools for examining how systems of power mutually influence one another to create unequal outcomes that disadvantage historically excluded populations (i.e., Black women, Latinas, Native American women, the LGBTQ+ community, neurodiverse students, etc.). Less CS education research has addressed issues of structural oppression that shape the lived experiences of historically excluded populations in computing.

As a computing professional and scholar, I have extensive experience working with Black and Brown student populations to provide exposure and access to K-12 CS education, positioning them as agents of knowledge and creators of technology. For example, I apply Black feminist epistemologies as the theoretical basis of my work, developing alternative pedagogical strategies and research methods to recruit and retain Black women in the field of computing. As a result of my experiences, I bring a unique perspective to the ACM SIGCSE board. Working with the ACM SIGCSE leadership, I will work to create more equitable spaces that enable all students to successfully navigate the K-16 computing ecosystem and better serve the needs of the global SIGCSE community.

I would be honored to serve on the SIGCSE Board in the position of At-Large Member. I have been an active and enthusiastic member of the SIGCSE community for over 25 years. My organizational ability and commitment to this community is evidenced through my roles as SIGCSE Vice Chair and Secretary, Program Co-chair of SIGCSE Technical Symposium, Co-Chair of ICER, Chair of the Australasian Chapter of SIGCSE, and leadership of ITiCSE Working Groups and doctoral consortia.

My scholarly activities include invited talks, development of computing education research methods courses, more than 170 peer-reviewed computing education publications, and the establishment of the Monash Museum of Computing History. As a member of the SIGCSE Board, I would work with members to promote activities that would: further build the SIGCSE community, ensuring it has a diverse and global focus; support initiatives to increase student engagement and the student learning experience; encourage participation in computing education doctoral programs, thus ensuring the future of our community, and build the capacity of computing education researchers, thus raising the profile of computing education as a research discipline.

STATEMENT

I am honored to have been asked to run for the SIGCSE At-Large Member position. I have been an active member of ACM for over a decade. I currently serve as a Workshops’ Co-Chair for SIGCSE Technical Symposium (TS) 2022. I have advised student chapters of ACM for over eight years. I have also served as a committee member on various research panels, steering committee member with the NCWIT Academic Alliance, and program evaluator for ABET. My vast and broad experiences position me to serve as an At-Large Member.

ACM SIGCSE has served the computing community for years by providing outstanding academic programming at the annual SIGCSE TS. Academicians have been able to advance knowledge in computing as a result of their participation in SIGCSE. It is imperative that the work of SIGCSE continues to positively impact future generations.

Lastly, we must work towards ensuring that the SIGCSE community is inclusive and promote diversity, equity, and inclusion while noting that the diversity of ideas brings about positive change. If elected an At-Large Member, I will strive to make certain that SIGCSE support efforts that drive change and work with initiatives that address inequity in computing.
