STATEMENT

I am honored and enthusiastic to accept the nomination for SIGHPC Chair! My goal is to further the reach and success of this vibrant organization while continuing to foster community growth. As the current Treasurer of SIGHPC, I have worked with the Executive Committee to expand student and early career travel grants, develop student programs at conferences, and mature the SIGHPC Fellowship program. During my time as SIGHPC membership coordinator, professional membership increased while student membership doubled. My volunteer efforts across multiple committees for the SC Conference along with involvement on conference committees for other professional societies has prepared me to serve the SIGHPC community as Chair.

These experiences, especially during the global pandemic, have provided valuable exposure to the needs of our community and opportunities for growth. If elected, I will work to expand the impact of SIGHPC with a focus on diversity and inclusion across the organization. The growth and success of this SIG allows us to serve members of the HPC community in new and exciting ways. I will seek to enhance existing activities for members and to increase networking, scholarship, award, and support opportunities for both student and professional members.

STATEMENT

SIGHPC is a vibrant community. Still, we can do more to further promote SIGHPC and touch a more diverse community. I have been a member of ACM for the past 20 years. I have been an active volunteer contributing to the success of SIGHPC for the past six years. I also served as Committee Member on various ACM conferences, such as the SC19 General Chair, and I am a Steering Committee Member of the SC conference. Currently, I am serving as an SIGHPC At-Large Member. My experience in these positions have prepared me well for serving you, and SIGHPC, as Vice Chair. If you choose me, I will continue the tremendous effort and high value activities that the current SIGHPC leadership built in the past years, together with the several SIGHPC volunteers and the SIGHPC community.

I will reach out to the new generation of SIGHPC volunteers by promoting the active participation of junior faculty, post-docs, and researchers. I also want to support the building of a more diverse SIGHPC community by including women, small colleges, and small universities. As your Vice Chair, I will work with you to make SIGHPC your home for your educational and research activities

STATEMENT

I am honored to be nominated for the SIGHPC Vice Chair role. I have been an active member of the SIGHPC community for over 7 years, first as a member and then serving as Meetings Coordinator. During this time, I have served as an ambassador for SIGHPC by encouraging events to consider partnering with SIGHPC and helping organizers navigate the process.

I am actively engaged in the community and have participated in the SC planning and technical committees since 2013. I also co-lead the Americas HPC Collaboration, which fosters the development of partnerships between HPC organizations and researchers from North, Central, South America, and the Caribbean. As part of this initiative, we held the first Americas HPC Collaboration Workshop at CARLA 2021 which showcased successful collaborations in the region and will help encourage the formation of new partnerships.

Having started my HPC career as a Student Volunteer at SC10, I strongly believe that SIGHPC should continue providing support and exposure to the next generation of students and professionals. If elected, I will continue advocating for initiatives that broaden participation, develop and showcase new talent, and retain professionals in HPC to maintain and foster a vibrant, collaborative, and inclusive community.

STATEMENT

The HPC community has been incredibly important to me over my 28-year HPC career. Having been involved with the SC conference for over 20 years, culminating in service as SC20 General Chair, I would be honored to continue serving our community as SIGHPC Treasurer.

Promoting development and diversity in the HPC community is a passion of mine. For SC20, I re-instantiated the Inclusivity Committee and with the Inclusivity Chair, founded the HPC in the City initiative to engage leaders, educators, and students to combine their collective talents and HPC capabilities to address problems that were relevant to the greater Atlanta metro area.

Finally, I have significant experience in budget management. During my five years as the Associate Director for HPC Centers in the DoD HPC Modernization Program, I managed a $100M operating budget which funded five supercomputing centers and cross-center activities, as well as a $60M annual procurement budget to acquire HPC systems for those centers. Today I lead the Navy DoD Supercomputing Resource Center in operating $55M of supercomputing capability and associated storage, networks, and computational expertise providing over 20 petaFLOPS of computing power to over 3,000 DoD RDT&E, S&T, and acquisition professionals.

STATEMENT

In these uncertain times, it’s critical that we are good stewards of the resources we have. As Treasurer, I will push for fiscal moderation to fund proven initiatives that have shown great outcomes for the community and shepherd us back to fiscal normalcy. Additionally, in this role I will bring perspectives from the large community of research staff and HPC systems professionals that is active every day, facilitating HPC research.

I’m currently serving as SIGHPC Fellowship Coordinator and Families@SC chair for SC22. As an active member of the SC Conference planning committee, I lead the team that implemented reproducibility initiative in 2015 and have supported this effort through my roles as Student Cluster Competition Chair (SC16, SC17), Reproducibility Challenge Chair (SC20), and Journal Special Issue Chair (SC17, SC20, SC21). I am proud that insights from these SCC reproducibility efforts have gone on to have a positive impact on the technical program artifact evaluation process. Later, I co-founded the HPCSYSPROS workshop and served as program chair in 2018, increasing the attendance 15%, year over year. It was the 2nd largest workshop at SC19.

STATEMENT

I am excited to run for an At Large Member position with SIGHPC. I have been involved with the SIG since 2019 and enjoy supporting the organization through social media posts and meeting people at conferences. I have served as a reviewer for the SIGHPC Fellowship program and am always amazed by the caliber of applicants for the fellowships.

I would like to see SIGHPC increase support for a more diverse community of researchers across the growing range of disciplines that use HPC resources. With Chapters for HPC Education, HPC in RCE, the convergence with Big Data, and SYSPROS, SIGHPC is reaching across our community, but we need to do more.

We should feel a responsibility to ensure that more students from diverse backgrounds and disciplines are introduced to HPC. The SIGHPC CARES program also demonstrates a commitment to ensuring that all members of our community can attend conferences and participate in SIGHPC activities and have a positive experience, and that someone will be there to listen if they have an issue. I look forward to the day when a CARES Committee will not be necessary, but in the meantime, I’m glad it exists.

STATEMENT

I have been active within SIGHPC since its first years and am committed to ensure its long-term success. As an At-Large Member, I would see my mission to guarantee scientific quality and standards in SIG-sponsored events and conferences, e.g., Supercomputing. I would strive to further improve the already strong perception of HPC in computer science and the ACM.

I aim to devote special attention to fostering young careers, starting at the high school and undergraduate levels. I am not only supporting our local student cluster challenge team “Racklette,” but I also support such competitions as well as student and broader engagement programs within SIGHPC and the ACM. It is imperative to maintain our open and inclusive community cluster at all career levels---everybody should be encouraged to contribute!

We are currently observing a convergence of HPC, large-scale machine learning, and datacenter computing. We, as SIGHPC, should embrace this movement and contribute to its momentum as we can play a central role in the wider community. I like to strengthen the ties between the HPC, deep learning, and datacenter computing communities by working with other academics, professional organizations, and industry professionals.

STATEMENT

I gladly volunteer for an At-Large Member position at SIGHPC. I have been playing organizational roles at the SIGHPC-sponsored Supercomputing Conference since I acted as the Technical Program Vice-chair in 2019.

I believe I can benefit from those experiences to engage in this position and bring the perspective of a newcomer to the SIG organization. ACM SIGHPC is sponsoring the most successful conferences in HPC, and providing relevant awards and fellowships, hence directly influencing in the careers of many folks in our field. I believe this is the way to go, and we can keep doing the great work while trying to help even further our community. We can and should work on communicating effectively the SIG’s activities so that the grants, awards, and fellowships we offer reach those individuals who deserve them the most. If I am elected as an At-Large Member in the Executive Committee of SIGHPC, I commit to support the Chair and the entire team with the best of me, where I will bring a view from my research experience both in the US and in Europe.

STATEMENT

I am honored to be a candidate for an At-Large Member position in the Executive Committee of SIGHPC. I have been a member and active ACM volunteer since 2013, contributing to the success of the International Conference for High Performance Computing, Networking, Storage, and Analysis (SC) since 2009 in various roles in the organization committees. I also served for almost a decade on the Steering Committees of the SC and ISC conferences. My experience has prepared me well for serving the HPC community in this new role.

SIGHPC has made significant impact over the past decade by working on the important topics of diversity in HPC and support for early careers. As General Chair for the SC17 conference, which is co-sponsored by SIGHPC, I had to interact closely with the SIGHPC Executive Committee over three years, so I am already familiar with the work and procedures of the SIG. SIGHPC must continue to develop (and ideally extend) its support for a more inclusive and diverse HPC community. This requires a better understanding of diverse cultural, educational, and professional contexts, and better connectivity with local communities. As a European and a German, I can bring in an international angle and experiences into the SIGHPC Executive Committee.
