New Huffington Post Blog: Paul Messina on Why We Need Exascale Computing

March 16, 2017

ACM contributes a monthly blog on current issues in technology and society to The Huffington Post. Written by ACM members and guest authors, these blogs offer unique insights by computing professionals to improve the public dialogue around technology news. ACM bloggers also explore the ways in which computing and information technologies impact how we interact with one another and how these forces are reshaping the basic frameworks of society.

In his March 9 post Why We Need Exascale Computing, Paul Messina, ALD Exascale Project Director at the Argonne National Laboratory, extolls the benefits of this technology, which range from engineering to energy conservation to healthcare, biology, and storm prediction. In addition, the use of exascale computing in urban science promises to mitigate health hazards, reduce crime, and improve overall quality of life in cities by optimizing infrastructure. “The benefits of exascale computing will flow from classical simulations but also from large-scale data analysis, deep machine learning, and often the integration of the three methods,” he says.
