Abstract: In the wake of COVID-19 pandemic, a vast resource of over 135,000 scholarly articles, called CORD 19, were made available for the benefit of the medical community. The health care professionals not only needed quick and easy access to the information shared by others related to COVID-19, but also access documented knowledge about SARS-CoV-2, MERS and other related coronaviruses to gain new insights that can help them fight against this infection. The global community of AI researchers were called to apply recent advances in Natural Language Processing and AI techniques to facilitate the data analytics process. The text and data mining tools are developed with the intent to help the medical community develop answers to high priority scientific questions by finding the answers and also connect insights from heterogeneous sources. There is a growing urgency for these tools since the repository is growing at a rapid rate, making it difficult for the medical community to keep up. This talk will present an overview of the NLP initiatives designed to address the above challenges.

Dr. Lipika Dey is Principal Scientist at the TCS Research and Innovation Labs. Her research interests are in the areas of Natural Language Processing, Data Mining and Machine Learning. Lipika did her Integrated M.Sc. in Mathematics, M.Tech in Computer Science and Data Processing, and Ph.D. in Computer Science and Engineering - all from IIT Kharagpur. Prior to joining TCS in 2007, she was a faculty at the Department of Mathematics at IIT Delhi. She was awarded the Distinguished Scientist award by TCS in 2012. Lipika has been actively involved with ACM as a pioneer member of ACM-W.
Her interest in language is not restricted to profession. She is an active blogger and writes for various magazines.
