Continuing with our initiative of conducting multiple webinars during the COVID-19 related lockdown period, here is a webinar of immense relevance. As the name of the webinar series suggests, normally these webinars have been delivered by technology leaders from Indian industry. However, this time we have a special invited session by an eminent faculty from a US university. The special nature of the webinar should be obvious from the title of the talk and the expertise of the speaker. Since our speaker is in Eastern US time zone, please note the one-time change in timing to 6 pm IST.

Register now for the next session of our ACM India Industry Webinar series, "Computational Science for Real-time COVID-19 Response", to be presented on Saturday 25 April 2020 at 6 pm IST by Madhav Marathe, Professor at University of Virginia. The host for this session will be Anand Deshpande, Founder and CMD of Persistent Systems Ltd.

All students, faculty and industry professionals are welcome to attend the webinar. Feel free to forward this communication to those who would be interested.

Abstract: The COVID-19 pandemic represents an unprecedented global crisis and serves as a reminder of the social, economic and health burden of infectious diseases. The ongoing trends towards urbanization, global travel, climate change and a generally older and immuno-compromised population continue to make the problem of pandemic planning and control challenging. Recent advances in computing, AI and big-data have created new opportunities for realizing the vision of real-time epidemic science.

In this talk I will describe our group's work developing scalable and pervasive computing based concepts, theories and tools for planning, forecasting and response in the event of epidemics. I will draw on our work in supporting analysts and policy makers as they plan and respond to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. I will end the talk by outlining directions for future work.

Duration : 60 minutes (including audience Q&A)
