Abstract: Over the past few decades, there has been growing research that shows how computing can support educators to make their classrooms more inclusive. However, there is a need for more evidence describing how best to ensure that the teaching of computing itself is inclusive. In addition, it is also important for pedagogical practices in computing education and computational thinking to integrate equity as an integral component. In this talk, we will identify and share some inclusive pedagogical practices through relevant and authentic curriculum that focuses on creativity and depth of understanding, promoting culturally relevant tasks considering the needs of diverse users and ensuring an environment that challenges bias and has an inclusive and diverse computing culture.

Dr. Padhu Seshaiyer is a tenured full Professor at George Mason University, Virginia, US, and he serves as the Director of the STEM Accelerator Program as well as the Director of the Center for Outreach in Mathematics Professional Learning and Educational Technology. His research interests are in the broad areas of Computational Mathematics, Scientific Computing, Computational Thinking, STEM Education, Design and Systems Thinking, Innovation and Entrepreneurship. During the last decade, he initiated and directed a variety of educational programs including faculty development, postgraduate, graduate and undergraduate research, K-12 outreach, teacher professional development, and enrichment programs to foster the interest of students and teachers in STEM at all levels. He is also actively involved in multiple global collaborative projects and training programs that engage students, teachers and faculty from over 20 countries. In addition to his research accomplishments, he has contributed extensively to teaching and won several prestigious awards. In 2019, he was selected as Figures that Matter and was awarded an honorary doctorate from Vrije Universiteit Brussel, given to committed scientists who transcend the boundaries of their own disciplines, and to people who have been at the frontiers of societal change.
