Datathon@IndoML, 16-18 December 2021

October 30, 2021

Dear All,

Hope this email finds you in good health.

The Indian Symposium on Machine Learning (IndoML) online symposium series aims to provide an opportunity to the students and young researchers to engage with leading researchers across the globe. IndoML was started in 2020 by faculty members and researchers from IITs and leading industrial research labs with the central theme “AI for Science and Science for AI”.

In this iteration, IndoML 2021 has adopted the theme of “AI for Data and Data for AI”, focussing on how new AI problems are motivated by novel datasets, as well as how AI techniques help collect new datasets that can impact our understanding of the world around us.

In keeping with the theme and our central objective to involve students, IndoML 2021 has a new initiative—Datathon—aimed towards giving students exposure to machine learning through a problem-oriented approach. With the help of experts from academia and industry, we have curated four different datasets and corresponding problem statements (more information in the Datathon Kaggle Page). These range from problems, e.g. entity recognition in a code-switching dataset to relation extraction of Indian languages, to question-answering tasks, to abuse detection in Indian languages. The problems will be made open to a month-long challenge to students from India and abroad (short description of the challenges is given below). We plan to provide cash prizes to the winners of the datathon and would also invite them to speak in the main online symposium. Across all the challenges the participants would have an opportunity to win prizes worth up to INR 3.5 Lacs (generously sponsored by ACM India and Microsoft Research).

Apart from the lucrative prize and an opportunity to work on industry-relevant challenges, we also have an excellent list of top-tier expert speakers such as Professors Ray Mooney, Chris Potts, and Michael Bronstein; they exemplify different aspects of the IndoML 2021 theme.

We hope that you will participate in the event and make the IndoML Datathon 2021 a leading ML hack event in India.

Kindly note, to be eligible for the prize, participating teams should register both here and on Kaggle.

Regards,

IndoML 2021 Organizing Committee
