Abstract: We are standing at the cusp of a unique opportunity to catapult India into a new era of socio-economic development powered by technology. 5G and beyond represents the disruptive convergence of technologies with the potential to transform all aspects of our lives. Atma Nirbhar Bharat is about unleashing the potential of India to transform itself from being a "late consumer of products and technology" to becoming "a significant global producer of technology and products." This talk tries to make a case for the catalytic role that "standards driven research" can play in seizing this opportunity to transform India.

The talk will start with building the link between the 5G paradigm shift and the vision of Atma Nirbhar Bharat. Then we will dwell on India's unique challenges and opportunities in embracing new and emerging technologies. The case study of how China embraced the "standards driven research" model to emerge as a giant in technology will be presented. An overview of the global world of standards will be provided. Finally, India's most recent initiatives and an Indian framework to emerge as a leader in the world of telecom standards development will be used to urge the audience to take the first step to join hands in this journey of transformation.
