Duration:

60 Minutes (including Q&A)

Abstract:

Very often curriculum does not take into account a major change in the knowledge ecosystem. Today, there is tremendous amount of free material available for self-learning if the student has the right motivation and peer learning group, an openness to collaborate, and reasonable access to the internet. In this talk I will share my experience in offering the elective course COP315 — Embedded Systems Design Project — for nearly 25 years, and the changes it went through in this period while the focus remained on innovation and design targeted toward social impact projects.

Presenter:

M. Balakrishnan is a professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, IIT Delhi. For the last 33 years he has been involved in teaching and research in the areas of digital systems design, electronic design automation, and embedded systems. Further, at IIT Delhi, he has initiated a number of programs and activities to promote research and start-ups as well as outreach to the community. ASSISTECH, a laboratory and research group founded by Prof. Balakrishnan along with Prof. P.V.M. Rao (Mechanical Engineering), is involved in developing a number of assistive devices targeted towards the mobility and education of the visually impaired. He is a fellow of ACM and INAE, and is the recipient of three National Awards, the ACM Eugene L. Lawler Award, and IIT Delhi's Liftime award for his work in the disability space.
