ACM's Partnership with SocialCoder: Computing for Social Good

December 15, 2016

A core component of ACM's activities is to use our community's knowledge and skills to advance the profession and make a positive impact in the world. Consistent with this mission, ACM recently partnered with SocialCoder, an organization that connects volunteer programmers and software developers with registered charities and helps match them to suitable projects based on their skills, experience, and the causes they care about. SocialCoder was started by Edward Guiness, a freelance software developer and author of Ace the Programming Interview (available to ACM members through the ACM Learning Center).

With SocialCoder, ACM members and other volunteers can use their technical skills for social good and offer crucial support on software development projects to individuals and organizations who could not otherwise afford it. Although the partnership is young, ACM members have been steadily registering for SocialCoder projects. More than half of those already signed up are students. Volunteers span the globe, and are from countries including Australia, Brazil, Canada, Cameroon, China, Egypt, India, Mexico, and Nigeria, among other countries of origin.
