New HuffPost Blog: Shari Trewin on How AI Can Improve Lives of People with Disabilities

July 18, 2017

ACM contributes a monthly blog on current issues in technology and society to HuffPost. Written by ACM members and guest authors, these blogs offer unique insights by computing professionals to improve the public dialogue around technology news. ACM bloggers also explore the ways in which computing and information technologies impact how we interact with one another and how these forces are reshaping the basic frameworks of society.

In her July 12 post Artificial Intelligence Poised to Improve Lives of People with Disabilities, IBM T.J. Watson Research Center's Shari Trewin highlights the ability of cognitive systems to engage with us, and the world, in more human-like ways. The ability to learn and generalize from examples is another important feature. Trewin says that through advances in machine learning, cognitive systems are rapidly improving their ability to see, to hear, and to interact with humans using natural language and gesture. In the process, they also become more able to support people with disabilities and the growing aging population.
