ACM has named 56 members ACM Fellows for significant contributions in areas including computer architecture, mobile networks, robotics, and systems security. The accomplishments of the 2018 ACM Fellows underpin the technologies that define the digital age and greatly impact our professional and personal lives. ACM Fellows are composed of an elite group that represents less than 1% of the Association’s global membership. "We are honored to add a new class of Fellows to ACM’s ranks and we look forward to the guidance and counsel they will provide to our organization," said ACM President Cherri M. Pancake. Researchers and practitioners at all phases of their careers (undergrad, PhD or postdoc) are encouraged to apply for the next Heidelberg Laureate Forum (September 22 to 27, 2019), for a chance to personally interact with laureates of the most prestigious prizes in mathematics and computer science, including the ACM A.M. Turing Award and the ACM Prize in Computing. Applications are due February 15, 2019.
ACM recently updated its Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct. The revised Code of Ethics addresses the significant advances in computing technology since the 1992 version, as well as the growing pervasiveness of computing in all aspects of society. To promote the Code throughout the computing community, ACM created a booklet, which includes the Code, case studies that illustrate how the Code can be applied to situations that arise in everyday practice and suggestions on how the Code can be used in educational settings and in companies and organizations. The 46th ACM SIGPLAN Symposium on Principles of Programming Languages is a forum for the discussion of all aspects of programming languages and programming systems. Co-hosted workshops will cover Certified Programs and Proofs, and Verification, Model Checking, and Abstract Interpretation. Keynote speakers are Mark Harman, an Engineering Manager at Facebook London, and Brigitte Pientka, an Associate Professor in the School of Computer Science at McGill University.
The ACM Education Board's Retention Committee has released "Retention in Computer Science Undergraduate Programs in the U.S.: Data Challenges and Promising Interventions." The report calls for additional research to provide a more nuanced understanding of the dynamics of attrition and retention, and encourages higher education institutions to provide proactive counseling to undergraduate students about career opportunities in CS.
ACM has named 49 Distinguished Members for outstanding contributions to the field. The 2018 ACM Distinguished Members are exemplars for their peers, and represent ACM’s worldwide geographic reach, as well as the exciting range of subdisciplines that constitute today’s technology landscape. The ACM Distinguished Member program recognizes up to 10 percent of ACM worldwide membership based on professional experience and significant achievements in computing.
During Computer Science Education Week, December 3 to 9, 2018 nearly 90 ACM student chapters participated in the Hour of Code, a global movement designed to generate excitement in young people about programming and technology. Games, tutorials, and other events were organized during Computer Science Education Week around the world, inspiring the next generation of computer scientists.
Francesca Rossi is the IBM AI Ethics Global Leader and a Distinguished Research Staff Member at the IBM T.J. Watson Research Center. She is also a Professor of Computer Science at the University of Padova, Italy. Rossi is on the steering committee of the AAAI/ACM Conference on Artificial Intelligence, Ethics and Society (AIES). “If AI is not trusted it will not be widely adopted, and this would not allow people to get all the potential benefits of this powerful technology.”
Proceedings of the ACM (PACM) is a journal series that launched in 2017. The series was created in recognition of the fact that conference-centric publishing disadvantages the CS community with respect to other scientific disciplines when competing with researchers from other disciplines for top science awards and career progression, and the fact that top ACM conferences have demonstrated high quality and high impact on the field. Face2Face is an approach for real-time facial reenactment of a monocular target video sequence (e.g., Youtube video). The source sequence is also a monocular video stream, captured live with a commodity webcam. This video and accompanying article present research with the goal of developing methods for animating facial expressions of the target video by a source actor and re-render the manipulated output video in a photo-realistic fashion. The result is a convincing re-render of the synthesized target face on top of the corresponding video stream that seamlessly blends with the real-world illumination.
