ACM Open IoT Day to Examine Transparency, Trust, and Ethics in Age of Rapidly Advancing Technology

Google’s Vint Cerf, Known as the “Father of the Internet,” to Deliver Keynote Address

MUNICH, Germany, June 7, 2018ACM Open IoT Day, held in conjunction with ACM MobiSys 2018, will provide a venue for industry practitioners and academics to examine the future evolution of the Internet of Things (IoT), with talks and discussions addressing transparency, trust, and ethical considerations that arise from the rapid advances in enabling technologies and applications.

The day’s events, to be held June 11 at the Sheraton Hotel at Munich Arabella Park, will feature a keynote by ACM A.M. Turing Laureate Vinton G. “Vint” Cerf, Google Vice President and Chief Internet Evangelist, who will address necessary steps to be taken in the near future to ensure the safety, security, privacy, and interoperability of future programmable devices within IoT ecosystems.

“The growing pervasiveness and continuous improvement of communication technologies is finally enabling the long-standing vision of an actual, intelligent Internet of Things, where connected objects are fully integrated into smart environments at multiple scales, from individual homes to whole cities,” said Open IoT Day Co-Chair Jörg Ott, of Technical University of Munich (Germany). “In fact, the IoT world is still in its infancy, and much of it is still yet to be discovered, understood, and leveraged. These are thus exciting and unique times for devising and proposing novel ideas that will shape the evolution of the IoT ecosystem in the coming years.”

Conference highlights include:

  • Keynote address by Google Vice President and Chief Internet Evangelist Vinton G. Cerf, who will address desirable properties that should be inherent in an IoT ecosystem if we are to assure the safety, security, privacy, and interoperability of future programmable devices
  • Session on “Creating an Internet of Intelligent Things” with IBM Electronics Industry Business Leader Martin Kienzle, who will identify some of the key problems to be solved for the emergence of a truly intelligent IoT
  • A discussion of the future role of the internet of things in connected vehicles with Martin Arend, General Manager E/E Architecture and Technologies at BMW

“This gathering presents a tremendous opportunity for experts from all corners of the computing world to come together and shed light on the future of mobile computing and wireless systems, applications, and services,” added Open IoT Day Co-Chair Falko Dressler, of Paderborn University (Germany). “We are on the cusp of a revolutionary age in computing, and the design, implementation, usage, and evaluation of the systems we create will be integral in shaping the increasingly digital and interconnected world of the future.”
