World's Leading AI Ethics Experts Gather in Athens to Shape the Future of Responsible AI
ACM FAccT 2025 Conference Explores How to Build Fairer, More Accountable Algorithmic Systems
ATHENS – June 18, 2025– In a world increasingly shaped by AI, the 2025 ACM Conference on Fairness, Accountability, and Transparency (FAccT 2025) arrives at a pivotal moment. From June 23-26, more than 500 researchers, technologists, policymakers, and civil society leaders will gather in Athens, Greece to examine how algorithmic systems are reshaping the world—and to explore what it takes to ensure they do so justly.
Hosted at the historic Athens Conservatoire, ACM FAccT 2025 is the flagship interdisciplinary conference addressing the social and technical dimensions of algorithmic decision-making. This eighth annual Association for Computing Machinery -sponsored conference will present groundbreaking, peer-reviewed research across computing sciences, social sciences, law, and the humanities. The focus: developing actionable solutions and critical frameworks to guide responsible AI and data-driven technologies.
“The unprecedented advances and rapid integration of AI and data technologies have created an urgent need for a scientific and public conversation about AI ethics,” explained ACM President Yannis Ioannidis. “The social, legal, political, and philosophical challenges of the use of these technologies must be—and have in part already been—raised to the same level of importance as the scientific and technical challenges they bring. I am very excited to welcome the conference to my hometown in Greece this year—the cradle of democracy and philosophy as well as one of Europe’s fast-growing research and technology hubs.”
ACM FAccT is committed to rigorous, interdisciplinary scholarship that interrogates not only the fairness of algorithmic systems, but also the institutions, incentives, and power structures in which they operate. This year's program includes hundreds of peer-reviewed papers exploring legal, economic, and societal questions from opaque recommendation algorithms and surveillance tools to biased decision-making in healthcare, hiring, and criminal justice.
Speaker Lineup Tackles AI's Biggest Questions
Keynote speakers include Suresh Venkatasubramanian (Brown University), Nathalie Smuha (KU Leuven), Kristian Lum (Google DeepMind), and Molly Crockett (Princeton University), whose work spans the technical, legal, and ethical dimensions of AI. A special local plenary, "From Ancient Logic to Algorithmic Justice: Greece and the Ethics of AI,” will be led by Evaggelia Pitoura and Charalambos Tsekeris, drawing on the philosophical legacy of Greece to frame today’s technological dilemmas.

The conference's more than 250 sessions (including 217 peer-reviewed papers, 18 workshops, and 20 tutorials) will be livestreamed and recorded to ensure global accessibility. As AI systems grow more embedded in economic and social life, ACM FAccT 2025 asks the fundamental questions: How should we govern algorithms? Who is accountable when harm occurs? And what values must be encoded to ensure AI serves the public good?
