ACM Celebrates Ada Lovelace Day

ACM is celebrating the legacy of pioneering programmer Ada Lovelace with a month-long series featuring women who have contributed groundbreaking innovations and dedicated service to the computing profession. To mark Ada's birthday, which this year is being observed on October 9, ACM recognizes the women who have made historic advances in the field and who are mentoring tomorrow's computing pioneers. Participate in a Global Survey of Scientists

The 2018 Global Survey of Mathematical, Computing, and Natural Scientists needs people in mathematical, computing and natural sciences, including students, to share their career and educational experiences. The data being collected will include focused information about women in these fields. The survey is being conducted by The Gender Gap in Science project, funded by the International Council for Science, a collaboration of several organizations including ACM.

AWARDS

Deborah Estrin Named 2018 MacArthur Fellow

ACM Fellow and Athena Lecturer Deborah Estrin has been named a 2018 MacArthur Fellow. She was cited for designing open-source platforms that leverage mobile devices and data to address socio-technological challenges such as personal health management. Estrin is an Associate Dean and professor in Cornell Tech's Computer Science department, and is founder of the Health Tech Hub at the Jacobs Technion-Cornell Institute and co-founder of the nonprofit startup Open mHealth.

ACM Award Nomination Submission Procedures

Each year, ACM recognizes technical and professional achievements within the computing and information technology community through its celebrated Awards Program. ACM welcomes nominations for candidates whose work exemplifies the best and most influential contributions to our community, and society at large. ACM's award committees evaluate the contributions of candidates for various awards that span a spectrum of professional and technological accomplishments. For awards presented at the annual June banquet, the deadline for award nominations is January 15, 2019, with the exception of the deadline for the Doctoral Dissertation Award nominations which is October 31, 2018.

Please take a moment to consider those individuals in your community who may be suitable for nomination. Refer to the award nominations page for nomination guidelines and the complete listing of Award Subcommittee Chairs and Members.

MEMBER RECOGNITION

Call for ACM Senior Member Nominations

The Senior Member advanced grade of membership recognizes ACM members with at least 10 years of professional experience and 5 years of continuous ACM Professional membership. Nominations are accepted on a quarterly basis. The deadline for nominations is December 3.

The The 21st ACM Conference on Computer-Supported Cooperative Work and Social Computing is the premier venue for research in the design and use of technologies that affect groups, organizations, communities, and networks. The opening keynote will be a discussion on media, platforms, and bias led by Emily Bell (Columbia University). Natasha Dow Schüll (New York University) will deliver the closing keynote.

ESEC/FSE 2018, November 4 to 9, Lake Buena Vista, Florida

The ACM Joint European Software Engineering Conference and Symposium on the Foundations of Software Engineering is a forum for researchers, practitioners, and educators to present and discuss the most recent innovations, trends, experiences, and challenges in the field of software engineering. Scheduled keynote speakers are Erik Meijer (Facebook), Dave Lang (Iron Galaxy Studios), Lingxiao Jiang (Singapore Management University), Stephane Glondu (INRIA Nancy), and Zhendong Su (ETH Zurich).

SPLASH 2018, November 4 to 9, Boston, Massachusetts

The ACM SIGPLAN Conference on Systems, Programming, Languages and Applications: Software for Humanity embraces all aspects of software construction and delivery to make it the premier conference at the intersection of programming, languages, and software engineering. ACM A.M. Turing Award recipient Barbara Liskov (MIT); Oracle's Guy L. Steele Jr.; and MIT's Daniel Jackson are among the scheduled keynote speakers.

SIGSPATIAL 2018, November 6 to 9, Seattle, Washington

The ACM SIGSPATIAL International Conference on Advances in Geographic Information Systems brings together researchers, developers, users, and practitioners in novel systems based on geospatial data and knowledge, fostering interdisciplinary discussions and research. Daniel Delling, Research Engineer at Apple Maps, will deliver the keynote.

SC18, November 11 to 16, Dallas, Texas

The International Conference for High Performance Computing, Networking, Storage and Analysis will celebrate its 30th anniversary this year, with special events including a video featuring highlights of past conferences, an exhibit of physical and digital artifacts, and a panel of previous chairs discussing the past and future of the SC conference, supercomputing, and HPC research. The scheduled keynote speaker is MIT's Erik Brynjolfsson, and 12 Invited Talks will also take place.

VRST 2018, November 28 to December 1, Tokyo, Japan

The 24th ACM Symposium on Virtual Reality Software and Technology presents new research results, systems and techniques among researchers and developers concerned with augmented, virtual and mixed reality (AR/VR/MR) software and technology. Scheduled keynote speakers are Nick Whiting (Epic Games), Masatoshi Ishikawa (University of Tokyo), and Hao Li (Pinscreen and University of Southern California).

SIGGRAPH Asia 2018, December 4 to 7, Tokyo, Japan

The 11th ACM SIGGRAPH Asia Conference and Exhibition on Computer Graphics and Interactive Techniques will showcase some of the world’s top professionals, academics and creative minds who are at the forefront of digital imaging, research, science, art, animation, gaming, interactivity, education and emerging technologies. Keynote speakers are David Oh, Project Systems Engineer, NASA Jet Propulsion Lab; Erik Demaine, Professor of Computer Science, MIT; Kaname Hayashi, Founder and CEO, GROOVE X.

Watch Lectures and Panel Discussions from 6th Heidelberg Laureate Forum, September 23-28

At the 6th Heidelberg Laureate Forum (HLF 2018), held September 23-28, recipients of the ACM A.M. Turing Award and the ACM Prize in Computing (Computer Science), the Abel Prize (Mathematics), the Fields Medal (Mathematics), and the Nevanlinna Prize (Mathematical Aspects of Information Science) engaged in a cross-generational scientific dialogue with young researchers in Heidelberg, Germany. Lectures and panel discussions from the Forum are available for on-demand viewing via the video archive or on the HLF YouTube channel.

PUBLIC POLICY

ACM USTPC Expresses Concerns about Online Voting

ACM's US Technology Policy Committee (USTPC) is joining with organzations including the National Election Defense Coalition, R Street Institute, and Common Cause to release a report citing concerns on the security of internet and email voting. The report, Email and Internet Voting: The Overlooked Threat to Election Security, cites the increasing impact of cyberattacks on ballots in transit; malware on the voter’s computer/device; voter authentication; server attacks; and more. Recommendations include a return to paper ballots and other "low-tech" measures.

Former USACM Chair Ed Felten Confirmed by US Senate to PCLOB

Former USACM Chair Ed Felten was confirmed by the US Senate to the US Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board, the five-person board established at the recommendation of the 9/11 Commission and charged with evaluating and advising on executive branch anti-terrorism measures with respect to privacy and civil liberties.

Report Aims to Smooth Transition between Community College and Computing Career

A report by the ACM Education Policy Committee, Lighting the Path: from Community College to Computing Careers, analyzes various initiatives being implemented throughout the US that aim to increase the pipeline of students pursuing computing degrees; identify programs that have had the most success; and describe aspects of these programs that could be emulated elsewhere.

Encourage US High School Students to Apply for 2018-2019 ACM/CSTA Cutler-Bell Prize

Every year, the ACM/CSTA Cutler-Bell Prize in High School Computing recognizes talented high school students in computer science. The intent of the program is to promote and encourage the field of computer science, as well as to empower young and aspiring learners to pursue computing challenges outside of the traditional classroom environment.

The application process involves a Challenge that focuses on having the student develop an artifact that engages modern computing technology and computer science. Judges will be looking for submissions that demonstrate ingenuity, complexity, relevancy, originality, and a desire to further computer science as a discipline. The application period closes January 5, 2019.

Up to four winners will be selected and each will be awarded a $10,000 prize, which will be administered through the financial aid department at the university the student will attend. The prizes are funded by a $1 million endowment established by David Cutler and Gordon Bell.

Detailed information, including the link to the online application, is available on the ACM/CSTA Cutler-Bell Prize in High School Computing website. Winners of the 2018-2019 Cutler-Bell Prize will be notified via email in February 2019.

ACM Scholarships for Women Computing Students to Attend Research Conferences

The ACM Women's Council (ACM-W) provides support for women undergraduate or graduate students in computer science and related programs who wish to attend research conferences. This exposure to the computer science research world can encourage a student to continue on to the next level (Undergraduate to Graduate, Masters to Ph.D., Ph.D. to an industry or academic position). IEEE-CS and ACM are sharing their invited speaker programs, to further the dissemination of technical knowledge of computing fields that greatly benefit both memberships. IEEE-CS chapter volunteers can host a speaker from ACM's Distinguished Speakers Program (DSP), with access to top technology leaders and innovators from nearly every sector of the computing industry, by following the instructions on the DSP site. Report from womENcourage 2018 in Belgrade, Serbia

“Brilliant experience, fun and inspiring” sums up womENcourage 2018, held in Belgrade, Serbia October 3 to 5. Ninety-four percent of respondents clearly were inspired and encouraged by the keynote speeches, workshops, panels, posters and the role models. WomENcourage 2018 attracted a diverse group from 23 different countries who are working in different industries and are different age groups. Serbia has the largest delegation at 29.3%, followed by the UK with 22.3% of attendees. Fifty-seven percent of attendees were young people from 17 to 30 and the conference topped gender diversity attendance of all other years, with 11.3% male attendees. Attendees came from different careers which included academia, media, multinational technology companies and the private sector.

ACM Ubiquity Launches "Innovation Leaders" Series

Ubiquity, ACM's peer-reviewed web-based magazine devoted to the future of computing and the people who are creating it, is starting a new section on Innovation Leaders in November. The section is run in collaboration with the ACM Future of Computing Academy, a group of young professionals who are monitoring trends and emerging issues in computing and advising ACM on how to deal with them. The section consists of interviews of young professionals, who comment on their concerns about the future of computing and their ambitions to shape the future through their leadership. We probe how the interviewee's big concern grew up in their history, what they are doing about it in the present, and what ambitions and plans they have for shaping the future. Through this section, we aim to give voice to the many moving and compelling stories our young professionals are bringing to their work and our field.

ACM Publications Welcome New Editors-in-Chief

ACM Transactions on Computer-Human Interaction (TOCHI) welcomes Kristina Höök as new Editor-in-Chief, for the term November 1, 2018 to October 31, 2021. Kristina is a Professor in the Department of Media Technology and Interaction Design at KTH.

ACM Transactions on Parallel Computing (TOPC) welcomes David Bader as new Editor-in-Chief, for the term November 1, 2018 to October 31, 2021. David is a Professor and Chair in the School of Computational Science and Engineering and College of Computing at Georgia Institute of Technology.

ACM Transactions on Computer Systems (TOCS) welcomes Michael Swift as new Co-Editor-in-Chief, for the term November 1, 2018 to October 31, 2021. Michael is a Professor in the Computer Sciences Department at University of Wisconsin, Madison.

ACM Transactions on Internet Technology (TOIT) welcomes Ling Liu as new Editor-in-Chief, for the term December 1, 2018 to November 30, 2021. Ling is a Professor in the College of Computing at Georgia Institute of Technology.

New Journals ACM Digital Threats: Research and Practice, ACM Transactions on Data Science and ACM Transactions on Internet of Things Accepting Submissions

ACM Digital Threats: Research and Practice (DTRAP) targets the prevention, identification, mitigation, and elimination of digital threats, aiming to bridge the gap between academic research and industry practice. It is accepting submissions on extant digital threats, rather than laboratory models of potential threats.

ACM Transactions on Data Science (TDS) includes cross-disciplinary innovative research ideas, algorithms, systems, theory and applications on data science, including data cleaning, transformation, representation, integration, indexing, modeling, analysis, visualization, and interpretation while retaining privacy, fairness, provenance, transparency, and provision of social benefit, within the context of big data.

ACM Transactions on Internet of Things (TIOT) publishes novel research contributions and experience reports in several research domains whose synergy and interrelations enable the IoT vision. TIOT focuses on system designs, end-to-end architectures, and enabling technologies, and on publishing results and insights corroborated by a strong experimental component.

ACM Queue Presents: "How to Live in a Post-Meltdown and -Spectre World"

In this article for ACM Queue, Rich Bennett and his colleagues at the Global Technology Risk and Information Security Team at Goldman Sachs describe the lessons learned from the discoveries of the Meltdown and Spectre network security vulnerabilities. In a world of zero days and multidimensional vulnerabilities, the speed and effectiveness of the response to triage and prioritizing risk-reduction efforts are vital to all organizations. More high-profile and complex vulnerabilities are sure to follow, so now is a good time to take lessons learned from Spectre and Meltdown and use them to help prepare for the next battle.

What is PACM?

Proceedings of the ACM (PACM) is a journal series that launched in 2017. The series was created in recognition of the fact that conference-centric publishing disadvantages the CS community with respect to other scientific disciplines when competing with researchers from other disciplines for top science awards and career progression, and the fact that top ACM conferences have demonstrated high quality and high impact on the field. There are PACMs on Programming Languages, Interactive, Mobile, Wearable and Ubiquitous Technologies, Measurement and Analysis of Computing Systems, and HCI.
